Well alexnoe, it isn't in this time LG put bitsetting on this drive. I am becoming afraid LG will not put this [*Profanity*] on this drive, and i will need to downgrade to 4120b

I'm *really* glad I have the 4120B *g*

However, there is still a chance that the LG 4160B can do bitsetting, but that it uses different commands than the 4120B. In that case, my program would fail of course.

That's what my Nero CD Speed 3.40 reports with a YUDEN000T02 disc burnt in a 4120B@4160B.A302 firmware. I tried only A302 with Nero CD Speed and Nero Burning Rom 6.6.0.0.

Does Nero 6.6 show a bitsetting dialog like for the 4120B? Or does that drive *always* set the booktype to dvd-rom? Or did LG indeed use new commands?

I am creating some hove this drive can choose bitsetting...
Let's see if it was because of the modification or because of the new firmware.

There's a dialoag, yes. This is a PRODISCR03 8x DVD+R.

Here's a CDSpeed-created YUDEN000T02 8x DVD+R.

I set the shown disc type in Nero CD Speed to show the "Book Type" value instead of "Disc Type" value.

Same disc. I have only SOHW-1613S@1633S now because every other Lite-On DVD writer I had was replaced with 1613S.

After KProbe-scanned.

Hi,

I don't understand why a drive 4120b flashed with 4160b firmware (a302) can do bitsetting and a drive 4160b with same firmware can not ?

Either the firmware was patched (where can I get it?) or its a hardware issue and 4160b will never can do bitsetting.

Anybody out there having a 4160b with bitsetting ?
I suppose LG w'ont bring out firmware supporting it.

Kennyshin: What does MY bitsetting app tell about YOUR drive when using -try -debug?

If it fails i'll upload some aspi-spyware so that you can create some log files for me :p

It's long. I have two drives attached here: LG GSA-4120B@4160B A302 firmware and Pioneer DVR-108 1.14 firmware.

Command line in a Windows XP window should report the same? I used "CMD" inside Win XP SP2 though I had to boot using a Win98 boot disk to flash the 4120B to 4160B.

Your log is fine, though the result is CRAP CRAP CRAP

Your drive reacts to LG 4120B bitsetting command, and the drive of ChicoByte doesn't. What a mess :(

And the pioneer drive kinda reacts to Benq commands in a very random way. I'll have to add that to the readme :o

I think if A302 does not support bitsetting officially, LG will release another firmware that does eventually, sooner or later. It's been at least five years since LG started selling DVD writers and it was only with GSA-4120B N0AD LG-inside firmware that LG first supported bitsetting of any kind in around April, 2004. Public release was even a few months later than that. That was a decision mainly based on market trend.

You can get the firmware from TDB and you have to send an email first as explained in the 4120B@4160B thread.

Then someone patched bitsetting into your A302 firmware...

Does anybody know if the hardware of both drives is identical?

They are at least very similar.

It's stock A302 with a patch applied to run on a GSA-4120B. Certainly no bitsetting patch.

To see if it makes difference, I tried going back to Nero 6.3.1.25. There's also an Options button to allow me choose between a few. A little different from the one in Nero 6.6.0.0.

Automatic
DVD-ROM
Physical disk type
Current recorder setting

Your very drive answers to the same bitsetting commands as the LG GSA-4120B (otherwise my app would not have succeeded in setting the booktype on your drive)... but ChicoByte's drive doesn't.

Maybe the hack done to enable the flash over the 4120 also opened the doors to bitsetting. So Anyone up to try the 4120-to-4160 on the 4160 ?

Other possibility is that the 4160 hardware is not so similar to the 4120 and its hardware don't realy support bitsetting , if that is possible.

I'm inclined to think 4120 and 4160 are identical in hardware. For 4160 not supporting bitsetting sounds impossible.

If you have a GSA-4120B, you can try it yourself. From my tests, all DVD+R discs I have burned in 4120B with firmware from N0AD to A302 TDB have DVD-ROM book type. Nero CD Speed "Create Data Disc", Nero Burning Rom, DVD Fab... all write DVD+R as DVD-ROM, unless told otherwise.

Well , that is would be good news.
So , maybe the hack to enable 4160 firmware to the 4120 "cracked" bitsetting lock.
Would be nice to try this firmware for the 4120 in the 4160 to see if it enables bitsetting in it.

I own an 4160 and with the 302 I got the same results as Chicobyte.

Perhaps there is something in the EEPROM or the CORE portion of the firmware. We'll take a look when we get some time.

So... 4120B@4160B A302 (by TDB) is superior to 4160B A302?

I'd like to get a real 4160 and another 4120 to test further, but then if I could afford them, I'd rather first get ND-3500A and DW16x0.
