I have found that if I first read a CD-RW recorded with this same SBW-242 drive (don't laugh, it's a PRINCO CD-RW) that I can then read a DVD-R inserted immediately after removing the CD-RW...sometimes. I can never read the DVD-R unless I have first read a CD-RW. The disks I have problems with are DVD-R data disks that have been recorded on various platforms and the disks are various brands. DVD-R video disks seem to work just fine (playing with PowerDVD 5).
I searched through various forums in an attempt to identify the problem and have seen other people with DVD-R read problems with varied proposed solutions. I have several DVD-R data disks that I must read. Now that I have found a work-around (by first reading a CD-RW ... very strange), finding a solution for this has now become more of a challenge than a necessity.
Does this seem like a firmware issue?

Unfortunately, I'm not certain of the software/hardware used to create the DVD-Rs that I'm trying to read. I am fairly certain that one of the disks was created using a Sony DRX-510UL drive and Veritas Software (software that came with the Sony Drive).

Thanx

It turns out that the reason I had problems reading DVD-R data disks was because Norton Antivirus was configured to scan all removable media. When I disable the autoscan of removable media, I can read the DVD-R data disks just fine. It appears that my sbw-242 combo drive is working just fine and does not need any firmware changes. The problem specifics are as follows:
Problem: Unable to reliably read DVD-R data disks
Cause: Norton Antivirus configured to autoscan all removable media
Solution: Temporarily disable Norton Antivirus when reading DVD-R Data Disk
Norton Antivirus Version: Norton Antivirus 2004 (10.0.1.13)

Hey guys
Ok, this is my situation.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 with the QSI SBW242U drive and a UD25 original firmware on it.
Does anyone have a hack for it or new firmware to make it region free?
Can i make a backup of this firmware with any util or does it have to be mtkflash?
Thanks for any help.

Use etna's autopatcher. You can, and SHOULD make a backup before flashing using mtkflash in DOS as explained on my page.

Well im sorry for that, i am bit of newbie about this so i dont know what info would be relevant from that log, anyway thanks for the reply. I will update my burning app soon but please check this screen cap from dvdinfo, if it would be helpful, it might not need me to update my nero since im not having problem on CDRW burning and CD reading at all. DVD reading only. To add some, I also getting clicky noise in my drive whenever i insert a DVDR disc and when i view that drive letter in "My Computer" It stops responding.

You could backup your original firmware, then try other SBW-242 firmwares that have been posted, but I don't expect that to help. Maybe "Twihead" would give you a new drive.

Please do send me the firmware and be sure not to lose the original firmware yourself. You can use mtkflash to flash as long as you use the proper command to ensure that the calibration data is not overwritten.

Hi all
I have an Acer Aspire 1353LC with the SBS 242 (realy a bad drive!) the original firmware was the UX08, now i flashed the drive (using the option /O 04000 1FFF) with the firmware UQ81, but it doesn't seem to solve any problem: i can't read a lot of DVD-R, and i've problems burning almost any CD-RW.
Can you suggest me any other firmware?
It's possible to flash the drive with any of the firmware posted in this thread?
Thanks in advance!

AutoQSI2 beta3 dont write the firmware correct in some cases. I have made a new version that use MTKFLASH instead.

Greetings to anyone reading this page.
I own an acer aspire 1353xc laptop with a qsi 242 combo with the UX08 firmware. I have problems writing cd-rw discs. Only one brand seems to work (i've tried several brands).
Can anyone tell me if there is a firmware version suitable for my drive? Will the new firmware solve the problem?

You can definitely use 'ux10'
Check out page 4 of this thread...there's a link there.
Warning!!!
This drive is tricky for updating firmware ..so first do a BACKUP of the firmware thats now in your drive
Each individual drive has it's own 'optical data'...no 2 drives are the same
So it's imperative that you backup 'your' firmware.
Read thru this thread all pages and you'll have a good idea about how to flash your drive
If it will solve your problem.....well who knows....i do know that 'ux10' is better at reading dvdrw's
There is supposedly a 'ux12' out there but nobody seems to have it.
Anyway Good Luck
