It's definitely faster than the 2510A or the Artec VOM 12E48X that I tested. For CD burning, It has burned no coasters at 48X so far so good. I like the drive. I was very surprised when I got it that it wasn't ZCLV like the 2500 and the 2510.
Maybe someone has a pioneer drive they can post some shots of so we can compare......
As far as ripping video or anything else like that I haven't really done that yet. It does burn RICOHJPNR01 at 8x even though they say 4X on the package I got, and all in all seems like a good drive. For those of you who ordered them how much are they going for in US$? All the MCC003's it only wants to do those at 8X but that is what they are rated for. Haven't tested any -R on the drive just yet. But I think I have some Yuden -R's around here somewhere.

I can neither confirm or deny. Wouldn't want the boss to see what I'm up to.

nice link flash, thanks.
hmmmm, a little off topic but do the graphs in the review look shaky and vibrating to you?? Cool if so and I hope it is and its not my vid card or monitor doing that.
EDIT... I guess it is just me... raised the agp voltage in my bios up one and reset ESCD and now it seems to look fine... no clue what was going on but I sure hope its not my card or monitor on the way out. =(.

Is anyone working on (Herrie perhaps?) hacked firmwares for the NEC 3500?
I gave up on my 2500 because it was a bad reader and it started annoying me but can anyone tell me-is 3500 also a bad reader? It looks like a very good unit on paper and I am thinking of buying one.
So will there be bitsetting and hacked firmwares?
Possible flashable from Windows cause DOS flashing is annoying

I would say wait until the drive is really available for the public, not only in the US or Asia...
Probably Herrie is already looking into the 3500 firmware but just give him a little bit time to breathe! Well.

On my tests so far i would say at this moment in time the Pioneer, as the more functional and better all rounder, the nec will be great when there is a wide range of 16x media available, but untill then its a bit usless, also add to the equation you will get more frequent firmware updates from Pioneer to iron your small probs out than you will from NEC and the drive looks a winner.

I agree that from the marketing b*llsh*t that is going around NEC would like you to believe theirs is better LOOK HERENEC Website wrote: It also offers significantly faster recording speeds, for example a 1 hour DVD can be recorded in less than 4 minutes. I DON'T THINK SO!
MY TESTS so far give the Pioneer the edge and I cannot imagine NEC being miraculously fast when it comes to burning 16x media, but until the media is readily available I will reserve my judgement.

Flash, I believe that's a bad marketing trick from NEC. They obviously meaning not a full DVD, only a half-filled one, cause normally a full (4.7GB) can hold up to 2hours of mpeg2 material.

The NEC is currently nearly a minute faster at 16x than the Pioneer is at 16x.

Is explained in the review on cdrinfo.com !
Quote: - Other features
The drive supports overburning, writing up to 90mins and can read/write CD-Text.

After reading around the web about the new NEC ND-3500AG I found some sites that had their pre-reviews of what to expect and in one of the forums I visited user [ Dave27] posted images of the drive rebadged as a TDK DVDRW1616N. Here are some of the results;
 Burning at 16x with Verbatim 8x DVD+R
 Time: 6 mins 14s
 His Kprobe scan
Notice the PI Average is only 1.17
 Burning at 12x with Verbatim 8x DVD-R
 Time : 6 mins 34s
Pioneer DVR-108 burning at 16x, time is 7 mins 13s
 Burning at 16x with 8x DVD+R SmartBuy 8x MID PRODISC R04
 Time : 6 mins 10s
Looks like a 16X Certified PRODISC
Nero InfoTool
The results are quite impressive not to mention a whole lot better than the Pioneer DVR-108. I read the review posted by CDRInfo http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/De ... wsId=10119 and personally I prefer the NEC.
ThanX to Dave27 for the Screenshots

Flash, with what 12x media do you talk about?
If you mean 8x@12x then that isn't the same, anyway, i beg to differ. I have consitently found the NEC faster @12x burning to 8x Verb -R.
I do agree with the speeds on the 8x burns themselves, my FUJI03 tests where identical to yours.
Maybe you should look at my DL tests while you are at it.

PPS
I am so impressed with the Pioneer as an all rounder i went and got a second drive today, so far Pioneer is winning the day. NEC definatley need a solution for DL Bit setting.
