My new Inspirion 9100 QSI SBW242U firmware UD25 has been writen over. Nero Infotool used to show read speed 24x write speed 24x. Not anymore. I tried the U301 Rpc1 patch and now it says;
read speed cd 8x
write speed cd 24x
read speed Dvd 4x
Any suggestions please
John

First of all, you should not have used any firmware that did not come from Dell. I sure hope you made a backup of your original firmware before flashing.
Reported speeds depend on the type of media in the drive. Put a pressed CD in the drive and it should show 24x again. If not, then it doesn't really matter anyways.

Hello all,
I have an Aspire 1353LC with SBW242 Combo Drive and Firmware UX08.
RPC is not my problem but i have some writing problems with CD-RW's.
So i asked Acer support for a new Firmware but they wrote they can't provide updates because these are OEM-Drives and the manufacturer (QSI) offers no Firmware-Updates?
Why can Dell and Sony provide Updates?
Unbelievable!
So i tried UQ81 from Zombie (thanks...) with the /O 04000 1FFF Parameter for MTKFlash in order to save my Calibration settings...
What should i say... now i have an SBW242C with Firmware UQ81 and my UX08 calibration Settings...
I don't now if this was a good Idea (comments please!) but it works...now i have a better reading performance with dvd+r and the CD-RW writing problem seems to be solved.
I saved my original UX08 before the update.
If anyone needs it look here:

Thanks for the good results, could you also dump the firmware from your drive now that it has been flashed and either post it online or mail it to me? It was very wise to backup before flashing, I'm glad you did that!

Hello!
No prob i thought that you will ask this...
http://people.freenet.de/EXCeptioN13/UQ81UX08.bin
If you compare the files in an hex-Editor you can see that it is uq81 except
the section $4000 to $5FFF which is identical to ux08...
The /O 04000 1FFF means exclude starting adress 4000 plus offset 1fff
(4000 to 5fff) from writing?
How did you find out that this is the calibration data?
By the way: I better purchased the Notebook with Toshiba DVD-R... QSI is not so good... very bad support...
Greetings... Exception13

By comparing multiple copies of firmwares that should have been identical I came up with a guess at the calibration data, but etna corrected me since the area was larger than I thought. I have 3 or 4 backups of UX08 now, I think.
Thanks for your backups!

Hello all,
Have someone any firmware for QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242B drive?
If yes, please send it to me.
gelowin33@yahoo.es
I had upgraded the firmware without backup it. And now don't recognize any CD or DVD.
I talked with Etna, but don't have the correct firmware to help me. The original was UK56.
Any ideas?
by the way.
My operating system is windows xp running in a Elitegroup's Notebook without floppy.
Have two partitions. One NTFS and one FAT32.
I think the drive is secondary master.
thank you very much.

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio PCG-K23F, and a combo CDRW/DVD ROM QSI 242C... I have problems reading discs in "Mode 2 XA", other discs in "Mode 2" have no problem... I've been reading the messages and I think that a firmware update could be the anwser... the version of my firmware is US83...

No, a firmware update won't help because by now no company will produce a drive that has problems with something as simple as reading a certain filesystem. The problem is more likely caused by the media or the CD burner or whatever.
Please send me a backup of your firmware made with mtkflash in DOS.

I may make a small page for the SBW-242 firmwares that I do have, but it is important that everyone does not forget about the fact that every single drive has unique calibration data in with the firmware. Flashing using mtkflash as the flash tool requires a special command to prevent the calibration data from being overwritten.

I am impressed with the knowledge that is accumulating in this forum about the QSI SBW-242, so I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice about this drive. My drive works perfectly for reading and creating CD-Rs and CD-RWs, but the drive has problems reading DVD-Rs. Could a firmware update resolve this problem?
My system specs are as follows:
Firmware: UD30
Lock Status: Unlocked
OS: Windows XP Home SP1

Below are the firmwares, sorted by device name and date, that I've received or dumped myself for the SBW-242. You should first make a backup of your original, unmodified firmware before flashing anything, then use the special command described by etna here to flash with mtkflash in DOS. Some of these backups lack calibration data so if you flash them to your drive improperly, you will definately end up with a dead drive. I do not know whether all firmares are interchangable or not...
These should all be original firmwares, you can use etna's autopatcher to make them region free.
QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242
UJ03-03 2003/01/28 - Fujitsu-Siemens
UD22-01 2003/03/07 - Dell
UX08-09 2003/03/26 - Acer
UX10-07 2003/04/04
UF02-01 2003/04/09
UFX2-01 2003/04/09
UD30-01 2003/11/18 - Dell
QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242U
US05-02 2004/03/01 - Sony
US06-03 2004/04/16 - Sony
NU CDRW/DVD SBW242U
U301-02 2003/05/23
QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242C
UQ81-03 2003/12/09 - Acer
Firmwares that I've read about, but do not have (Please send!):
UD25 Inspirion 9100 QSI SBW242U firmware
UK56 QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242 firmware
US83 Sony Vaio PCG-K23F CDRW/DVD ROM QSI 242C firmware
UX05
UK01
UX12
I welcome any other firmwares that anyone wants to send.

Thanx anyway.

The Dangerous Brothers wrote: The UD22 firmware, with the QSI identifier can be found here UD22.ZIP
Contains the original and RPC1 firmware in binary form suitable for MTKFlash 1.80
When using betas, please always make a backup of your current version and send it in if that version is not already available.
Brother Vlad
That link could maybe save my drive, but it dosent work anymore
Can you please take a look at it?
Thanks!
