good job on this thread imo. It will be a nice place to have collected info under one heading. I will surely be keeping my eye on this thread as I plan to upgrade to a 108 from my 107 if things continue to look good for this drive.

I would also add (before someone asks)
"No the Pioneer 107D cannot be upgraded to the 108"

Wow, that's a superb review!
Interesting that the drive isn't able to overburn DVD... but it's not that important anyway.
The problems with oversized CD formats remind me on earlier NEC/Pioneer drives.

Cheers! That's well informative. Got 1 question though. is it possible to flash the 108 to an A08 so you can use the drive quietening firmware?? (During DVD playback) obviously you're not going to get the honeycomb or anything. Or are the drives too different??

No, it was not possible for the 107D/107XL so it won't be for the 108/108XL either there are supposedly some important hardware differences.

It was me... I fixed some typos too. You had "108LX" instead of "108XL" in a few places.
Also removed the # synbols from the title because they're quite annoying.

Good thread (will probably become a sticky but we will need to remove the sticky clogging we have on the R/RW section first). Edited MXL RG04 -> RITEK G04
Toge wrote: 8) Is it possible to change a 108 into a A08? No, as there are some hardware difference between the two drives.
Huh??? doesn't A08 = 108 + Software? Are you sure yo didn't mean XL?

Honestly, I have no idea what could there be improved yet.
The only real difference to the NEC 3500 I can see is that the Pio uses Z-CLV for 16x and the NEC P-CAV, also CD burning speed differs. But is that really more important than burning quality?!? Not for me.
With luck I can check them both out this weekend, challenging together. I couldn't resist.

I read in the review by cdrinfo.com that the drive automatically sets its booktype to DVD-ROM when burning DL media. Will it be possible to have a (hacked/patched) firmware that is able to set the booktype to DVD-ROM for -R and +R media as well ?
This would be a hell of a feature over previous Pioneer burners (i have owned a few since the A03 ) and definately will get me to buy one.

DVD-R and DVD-RW don't need booktyping...

I cannot really answer this, but as far i know there isn't booktype possible for -R format, as for +R/+RW i don't think Pioneer will officially supports it
