Give the guy a chance! The new firmware's been out, what? A few days? It takes me longer than that to work myself up to mow the lawn!

Actually it IS available ( here in Europe ) so it would be nice to see a hacked firmware released
I always used 4x Princo DVD-R at 8x with my DVR-107, burned a lot with no failures.
It would be nice to have my new DVR-108 burn these disks at 8x too, it`s really a pain in the butt burning these at 4x after being used to 8x.
At this point i`m almost sorry i sold my dvr-107 to get my new dvr-108 so i`m looking forward to the hacked version of the firmware

Ah, [*Profanity*] it! So you want A 108 patched firmware? Then feast your teeth on this one (based on 1.06).
It's beta, it's 12xRip, it's RPC-1, and it's 6,8,12 and 16x4all on -R media only (but NOT 2 and 4x4all yet).
Now, don't expect anything else on the subject for a few days. And no need to remind me what isn't there yet either. It's beta, you should know better.
Again, I got very good results burning Arita 4x (RITEKG04) media at 16x.
Strategy used is MXL_RG03. SONY08D1 was tried: It's crap! TYG02 doesn't even manage to burn 6x and 8x properly, so it went to the trash as well, and TTH01 (the last 16s strategy in this firmware) probably expects too recent a dye to be worth anything on older ones.
Now try it, get coasters, cry, refine your testing with quality media and rejoice.
Oh, and use DVRFlash 2.0 (Windows pre-release) to flash it, but only on true Pioneer drives.
*Update by dhc014*
Newer patch based on 1.14 now available.

NIL: This is super! Thanx for this pre-release
So far i wrote 5 Princo 4x discs at 8x and they all work fine!
Media Information
Media code/Manufacturer ID PRINCO
Free Blocks 411107328
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.71GB)
Book Type DVD-R
Media Type DVD-R
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
Write Strategy Speed 4.0x 5540KBps
I`ve burned a lot of these disc with my dvr-107 at 8x without any coasters so i don`t know why people call this media crappy.
I know this pre-release will do fine untill the actual firmware will arrive.
Thanx again
Sorry if i gave you the feeling i was on your back

Superb job as usual Nil. I was looking into upgrading from my 107 to the 108 and was hoping to come across something like this to flash as soon as I got it. Though surprising, nice to see a release so quick. Overtime I am sure the patches will only get better such as + support for higher burning speeds etc.
From having a look at this firmware does it look much different then the 107 firmware in terms of patching?
Patensas how does the 108 fare to the 107? Is it just as quick and is the quality the same? I heard the 108 isnt up to par as the earlier pioneer releases in terms of speed and quality so don't want to jump the gun yet and get the 108 to be stuck with inferior burns when compared to my 107. Do you find the drive worth getting?

Hey Cantankerous,
So far the dvr-108 is working just fine! I flashed the firmware to the one above and burned some Princo dvd-r 4x at 8x and by the looks of it it`s just working fine.
I`ll go on and buy some different media this week and try some out. Of course i will let you know how it went.

Will there be a firmware for the A08?
And just to get an idea NIL, do you think there is a good chance to get this drive to do bitsetting on +R discs?

Newbie questions
Does Nil patch works on DVR-108 sold in Europa (aren't we RPC2?) ?
With 1.08 already flashed one?
Does it need to have a 3.5 disk and need to run under Dos (when you flash)?
What happen if Pioneer deliver in 2 or 3 months a new firmware especially made for use new media or to solve a conflict with an other hardware or software (for exemple a Windows OS evolution)?
In other words is it possible to go back from Nil firmware to an official pioneer firmware?
Thanks for answers

The answer is YES.
I have bought my DRV-108 (firmware 1.04) from SVP and set it as Region 2.
After I have flashed it with original 1.08 firmware downloaded from this site and then I have reflashed with :NIL> beta 16x4 using Drvflash2 under Windows 2000 SP4.
And all work fine.
Yesterday I have burned with Nero a RitekG04 at 16X with no errors (test with DVDInfoPro).

Then applied NILS 'hacked' firmware. I have now successfully burnt 8 DVDs with the above media. So much for 'PRINCO is crap' still got another 42 of these discs WD NILS you da MAN. I am eagerly awaiting a further firmware for to allow 16X with DVD+R as I have 25 NANYA discs that I want to try out... probably crap too (they were cheap).
Thanks again NILS!!!

Sorry NIL I meant NIL's. Talk about anal chef!
I have never had any problems with these PRINCO DVD's before when wrting at 2X and 4X are you suggesting that writing them at 16X is going to have an impact on how long they will last?

unfortunately a lot of cheaper media doesnt last long. Some last longer than others but even after 2 years or so you will start to notice some discs won't read properly if at all.
I just ordered a pack of Arita Branded RITEKR03's... I hope they burn with great quality and last me. I'm starting to worry about things I have burned in the past and whether or not they swill stand the test of time.

just bought some ritek dvd-r 4x g04.
burning with my dvr-108 at 12x with decrypter.
it starts of at 6x till it gets to 10% then it burns at 8x.
like at around 45%-50% it drops down to 1x or 0x for a second or two and it starts burning again at about 9x-11x.
is this normal?
will the haven't watch any of the video that i burned but will it effect the video and pause for a few seconds when it stopped burning and resume.
does anyone have this problem?
