Patch x is the patch that you need e.g. 105/106/107 you dig. And i think root user is the main one with all privileges.

I assume you mean Disc No-Eject... I'm not familiar with this issue. I haven't experienced it. I'd be glad to look into it, but it should really be in its own thread. Post a new message to the Mac section and we'll be glad to look into it and address it.

Well, I tried it 20 times and still no luck. Still getting the message about "Could not set kernel mode"

Seriously folks, has anyone had success *ACTUALLY* burning at 2x using media other than Apple's 2x media which at this point seems not to be discontinued. When using Toast if you do a SIMULATION run, it appears the 2x will work, but in fact when you actually burn, I get a "Media error" ;(

Hey xvi long time, no see . . 
Is there any update on this? I have a G5 with a DVR-106D drive inside that I'd like to flash to region free . . .

Sorry, thedoc, but it doesn't work so well. I did it and it looked like it solved the problem. But it still happens that CDs (or DVDs) keep being impossible to eject. Very annoying. Hope xvi is working on a solution... I'd like to do it myself but unfortunately I understand zip to all that, if I may say so - excuse my French: I'm French!

Fair enough, the Pioneer OEM DVR-106 had huge numbers of problems with OS X (kernel panics et al) - if I were you I would abandon the drive until the new packages come out. It is unfortunate more warning did not come with the original packages, but there we are.
Any chance of the new packages, btw - it has been quite a while!

Hi,
I have a genuine apple Pioneer DVR-103, but am unsure about how to flash it
I got the drive secondhand, so don't know what has been done to its firmware, but have found its firmware revision to be quite strange...
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-103:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-103
Revision: 2.00
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
The drive is unable to be flashed with any of the region free patches in mac os 9.
Also, if a cd or dvd is left in the drive for a while, without being used, the computer will not eject or read it untill the computer is put to sleep then woken, or restarted!
I don't know how to get this region free, or what's going on with it - in all other aspects it functions as it should.
Any help appreciated,

I had the same problem with a dvr-103 I received "dead" from a friend. After disassembling and re-seating all internal connections, I also was unable to flash with any of the OS9 installers (BTW: These must be installed from OS9 Proper. Not Classic Mode!). I ended up upgrading the firmware with a PC. It still shows up as an "Apple Supported/Shipped" drive.

Sems to work perfectly. Had the strange side effect of erasing the driver for my USB modem but that was easily fixable.

I used the xvi's Pioneer DVR-106 updater to change the firmware on my DVR-106D and everything seemed to work OK until I tried burning a DVD. When I do that I get buffer underrun and other errors in Toast:
"The drive reported an error: Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST, Sense Code = 0x21, 0x02 BUFFER UNDERRUN" and "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03".
The drive's firmware was v1.08, now it shows up as 1.07 like it's supposed to, but it won't burn anymore.
In hopes that I could fix the problem by returning to the 1.08 firmware, I asked the guys in our MIS department at work to try installing Pioneer's 1.08 firmware back on the drive, but they got an error saying the firmware version on the drive wasn't correct, so it couldn't be updated.
I've tried different DVD brands (one a TDK and the other a no-name brand) at 1x and 2x speeds with no luck. Toast gets to the point where it's writing the lead-in and then errors out.
The drive also fails when trying to burn a CD, and I know it's not the CD because I was able to burn that later on my CD burner.
I've also tried a DVD cleaner in case the problem was with a laser but there was no improvement.
Has anyone seen a problem like this and fixed it?
Appreciate any help on this. As of now, it looks like my drive is dead.

FOLLOWUP: I tried RipTasticMate's suggestion for restoring my drive to v1.08 and it worked as far as installing 1.08 went. Now my system report on the DVR-106D says:

Has anyone had any luck burning to other 2x dvd -r media using toast 6, and using Mac OS X.3.4? Everytime I try I get a Media error! Frustrating.

as far as I know, xvi has a version of DVRFlash on Mac that supports the DVR-103, and if everything goes well, this support should be integrated in the next version for the other platforms

After extensive flashing of various firmwares, and searching online, I find that perhaps the Apple drive that came in g4 quicksilvers if ever updated with Apples Cripleware A227, can never be undone. What I find is that the version number in the apple system profiler changes, but the drive behaves the same. (1x burning on 2x media, with the exception of Apple 2x media) which is not sold anymore. Hope this helps any others out there having the same issues I'm having. The best solution is a better drive.
