Now my question: Any idea what the hell I can do? Buy a FireWire Drive? Any chance to revert? Or try using firmware 1.08 from Pioneer, if it works on the Mac?

Firmware 1.08 works but leaves you the same "fried drive". CD's and DVD's work as long as they are playing. But when stopped the drive seems to lock after a while. I want back to A612!

oh thank god, someone else with the same problem. exactly, that's what's happening here. my questions: you tried 1.07, got it fried, then tried 1.08? How did you use 1.08 exactly, just for my information? Extracting it from the PC version, patching the script?! (In the PC version, there's no kernel part.)

I used 1.08 the same way as 1.07 (uses the same kernel, just rename 1.08 to the same name as the 1.07 file). Got back to 1.07 too. No change.
But tried the drive under 10.3.4 (built 60, clean install); left it overnight after playing with it and this morning i could play the disk again and eject !!! I have to figure out yet what is changed but there must be some extension or whatever that interferes in 10.3.3. Keep you posted.....

thanks for the info! the 10.3.4 bit sounds promising. perhaps Apple included 1.08/1.07 compatibility within Mac OS 10.3.4 since that's the new firmware or something.

anyone could tell me please what's the regular differences between 1.07 and "original" apple firmwares? (and a source for it ;)

did you try 1.07 or 1.08 under 10.3.4?

also, did you experience a "louder" drive while playing dvds with 1.07/1.08 in contrast to before?

Yes, i did. It's even annoying while playing regular CD's. Doesn't seem to slow down while changing tracks. (like a regular cd player would).
I did try 1.07 under 10.3.4 since i need RPC-1.

Yes, no difference. Another thing i found out is that when the drive is unavailable (in 10.3.3 that is) and can't be ejected, putting the computer to sleep and wakening it up regains control over the drive (playing, ejecting). So the problem is not as severe as thought. 10.3.4 probably solves this problem.

Just upgraded to 10.3.4 - hope for the best. It's loud there too (still on 1.07). Was 1.08 loud also?

Just updated to 10.3.4 and my patched DVR-106 will not eject disks or respond after a short while. Did not notice this behaviour under 10.3.3.

Try ejecting any CD/DVD that is inside.

With or without a disc I get the same result - it can't see the drive (as it's not responding as a Pioneer). How does the program identify where the DVDR drive is? Is there someway I could pass it a more concrete description, like /dev/disk1?

Hi!

I have a very strange problem after updating to 10.3.4.
I flashed my 105er to 1.33 (original, not flashed) and worked with it without any problem under 10.3.3. Now under 10.3.4 if I put a CD or DVD in nothing happens. Even Toast doesn't see a burner. :-(

This is what System Profiler sees now (sorry it is German)

Forget my last message.

After a complete shutdown of my Mac it works. A restart didn't work.
Very strange!

Hi all,

I was wondering if I download the 1.15 firmware update EXE file from Pioneer for my internal DVR-107 drive, would I be able to install the update using Virtual PC with Win98 on my Mac G4.

Thanks,

Looks like the problem is happening in 10.3.3 AND 10.3.4. I have verified it in 10.3.4 too now, after having it experienced it in 10.3.3. You can sleep and reawake your machine to gain access again, as peterharte said (I didn't use that much), but anyway, this sucks!!!

I know the flashing of firmware is one's own responsibility, but it would be nice to even hear a word from xvi about those problems now at least THREE PEOPLE seem to experience. Not that it's xvi's fault or something, just to get his opinion as an expert.

I still don't know if there are Apple firmwares to get and to reflash the drive to the old state. (just to tell me that it's impossible and why it's impossible would be greatly appreciated.)

It's impossible because the apple kernel is unavailable AFAIK.

On both of my Dual G5s on 10.3.4 I get the following:

Code:
Drive Information:
  Description    - PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-106D
  Firmware Rev.  - A606
  Firmware Date  - 03/06/17
  Manufacturer   - PIONEER
Drive is in normal mode.

Are you sure you want to flash this drive (y/n)?
y

Switching drive to Kernel mode:
Could not set Kernel mode

Done.
You may now quit this application.
IMPORTANT: It is strongly advised to REBOOT now.

As a follow-up when the drive is unavailable any media mounting/unmounting will freeze the program in use.

For example if I drag the CD icon to the trash the disk will not eject. If i then attempt to mount a CF cardin a FW reader, eject iPod from within iTunes or even attempt (unsucessfully) to select my 10.3.3. LaCie firewire drive as a startup disk it will crash. Putting the mac to sleep crashes it.

:?

I bought 2 107D, and both were patched (1.13) via a external FireWire case.
All perfect, most media X4 burnt in X8 successfully.

thanks.

I too have had the same problem on my Dual G5, The firmware update went well but now I have the issue of not being able to eject the CD out after a certain amount of time also trying to access applications like Disk utility and they just hang and dont work as it there is something wrong with all attached drives ? anyway the sleep and wake solution works but its a damn shame that i need to do that everytime now :(

hopefully a solution will arrive to fix it or at least give us a workaround, failing that i think ill need to buy another superdrive that i can install in my g5 that i can at least have fully working without having to keep putting it to sleep!

So the "drive does not eject CD/DVD" is on DVR-106 only, right?
Did you try the usual things: reboot, repair authorizations, etc?
Also, what OS version?

This firmware has been quite tested by PC users, so this looks more like a OS trouble.

I'd wish report of other users with same configs that updated with success, if any.

XVI, yes I did the usual standard things such as reboot, repair, boot from cd and repair. I have even did a total re-install and i still get the problem with both 10.3.3 and 10.3.4

I have today purchased a dvr 107 and hopefully i can flash that and it will work in my g5 but hopefully you will discover a solution for the DVR 106 for all the others that appear to be having problems as well.

regards
