well excuse my approach guys, but I still have doubts if this won't do any harm to my DVR-106D.......
I mean, who has extra money to replace the drive just like that in case something goes wrong??

anyone else who did perform the FW-update succesfully?

How about the DVR-107XLA? Can I use the "107 bundle" or have I to do something XL-specfic?

no, i know that the drive is always in IDE :D

but i didn't know if this new patch for mac was written at a low level for a specific device driver or at a high level in where you should not take care of this technical things !

in fact the card shown drives AS scsi to the OS but the drive is really an IDE so i saked the question because i don't know it a drive in scsi and ide works the same way: perhaps in my head i could have thinked that you don't access to a firmware of a scsi drive by the same manner as an ide drive.
and in this scsi emulation perhaps that it could have been a source of errors! but it isn't !

The flasher (DVRFlash) is always the same. You can take the 107 bundle, exchange the firmware files with the ones for an 107XL, edit the names in the command script and that should be it.
107XL firmware is here: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=25437

I've been following xvi's work since the release of rpc-1 firm for the
Pismo's SR-8174. With 4 flashed drives behind me, xvi has all my trust.
With all due respect for the creators of the respective rpc-1 firms, the fact
that xvi has ported these firms for the Mac enviroment is, for me, a sort of
endorsement that these flashers will work.
I haven't flashed the 106D in my PMG5 though;
I'm not comfortable without the rpc-2 down grade flasher.
(Just in case I have mechanical problems in components OTHER than the
superdrive, and need to sent back the PMG5, I don't wanna be caught with
my drive's pants down! *grin*)

do you know that you could send your G5 without its drive if you have a problem that touch the warranty but not for a drive problem?

i have a G5 and my motherboard was freezing the whole GUI it was not a HD related issue so i sent my G5 to repair but kept my drive with me !
ther was no problem ! ( but we are off-topic with the firmware/pionner/mac thing now ! :-) )

Just used the DVR-106 updater on my 1,25 GHz 20inch iMac. Got through without a hitch (I had to drag the .command to telnet, then press return, though). RC switching works, I can use Region X to change betweend 2 and 1 (that's what I need).

Only think I noticed is that the drive seems to be louder, runs on semi-high gear even when DVDs are shown.

Then I left a DVD in DVD Player on and after a while, wanted to watch it again. When I got back to it, DVD Player said it encountered an unrecoverable error and quit. The DVD was gone from the finder (Desktop), too. Damn thing was, I couldn't even get the DVD out!

Had to restart, DVD was on the desktop. I let it lie there for a while, then tried to access it. Didn't work, was gone from the finder after accessing it.

Allthewhile I was able via System Profiler to "see" the DVR-106. I couldn't open the drive either via keypress, though.

I restarted again, ejected the DVD, and here I am, with a seemingly fried DVR-106.

Now my question: Any idea what the hell I can do? Buy a FireWire Drive? Any chance to revert? Or try using firmware 1.08 from Pioneer, if it works on the Mac?

Kinda devastated,
memysel

From the hypercautious:

Anyone tried this new OSX, Pioneer DVR-105 patch by any chance? If so, what firmware were you running prior to flashing? A506 or other?

Thanks for any reassurances...

Well, I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed or not, so I apologize in advance if I missed it.

I have the Pioneer 106D with v1.08 firmware. Since Pioneer claims that when flashed to v1.07 or higher you cannot downgrade the firmware, will I even be able to flash mine with this patched version of 1.07 or will I have to wait for the patched version of 1.08?

Any rumors on when the new patched firmware for 1.08 for OSX will be released?

Thanks guys!

Tried to get this to flash my external firewire 107 to no avail.

> Could not open device PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107

The drive is reported in System profiler as manufacturer Cyclone (the manufacturer of the external box) with no model name, I tried running the script with that instead but it still couldn't find it.

./DVRFlash -s "Cyclone"
Could not open device Cyclone

Anyone got any tips on getting it to see the drive?

Try ejecting any CD/DVD that is inside.

Just bought last week an internal Pioneer 107D burner, firmware 1.10 . Was reluctant to apply your patch but I did. Was easy to install, no problem and the drive works perfectly.

I forgot to look at the writing speed before and after but it must be better or still the same at worse.

Bon travail et merci encore! 8-)

As i posted below, I kinda fried my DVR-106 (iMac 20 inch) with firmware 1.07 - drive stops working from time to time (OS 10.3.3). Any way to "roll back"? Or use 1.08 unpatched?

You can flash any Pioneer firmware, original or patched.
However, from your earlier post I get the feeling that something is wrong with your current system software. To flash your drive you should just have to double click the updater script, and that should start "Terminal" (NOT Telnet). If it doesn't work that way, I'd first start the usual system maintenance routines (repair permissions, prebind system, clean caches, etc.). It's not impossible that your drive is faulty, but other possibilities seem more likely to me.

Firmware 1.08 works but leaves you the same "fried drive". CD's and DVD's work as long as they are playing. But when stopped the drive seems to lock after a while. I want back to A612!

Mike - I meant Terminal, not Telnet. Clicking didn't work, but wasn't the problem; could start the Script from Terminal directly (drag & drop). It run through without a hitch. Gonna try the standard stuff.

oh thank god, someone else with the same problem. exactly, that's what's happening here. my questions: you tried 1.07, got it fried, then tried 1.08? How did you use 1.08 exactly, just for my information? Extracting it from the PC version, patching the script?! (In the PC version, there's no kernel part.)

Re: Roll back -- I dunno - anyone having that A612? (If that's the latest Apple version...) Please don't laugh if that's impossible to get...
