I have inspected this drive on a Dell computer but avoided flashing it because of other people's issues.
If it is indeed only a master/slave problem then one solution might be to connect it to a desktop PC where it doesn't conflict with another IDE device o its channel. There are adapters available to do this but I can't tell you whether or not there is even a firmware which will set the drive back to the correct IDE setting for your laptop.
It's something worth playing with though
