I have no idea what firmware flashing is. I linked to this page from a search for a device driver.

My samsung sc-148c cdrom stopped working. I have a dell running XP. I found the link for the firmware but Im not clear on what to do with the download.

Can anyone help me out? or point me in the direction of a help page where I can find out?

I appreciate any response, thanks. -JP

New firmware will not fix hardware or system software issues.

: I've been looking for the CD-ROM driver for this for a week now, and it'd be great if I could find it. Otherwise, I have a CD-less computer, and that sucks. Someone please help me out if you know you might have a copy of this driver or you know where to find it at. THANKS A LOT

There are no Windows XP drivers for your 48x internal ide cd-rom drive. Windows provides native support for all ide/scsi drives of recent manufacture. If you are having a problem with non-detection, then you possibly need to update your firmware. If your using this drive in a Dell computer, you may also need updated firmware. This updated firmware is posted on this Website (The firmware Page moved to http://www.firmware-flash.com or www.rpc1.com).

Other factors that may cause non-detection include the following:

1: Improperly connected ide ribbon cable or defective cable/connectors.
2: Master/Slave jumper not set correctly.
3: Problem with the ide port to which the drive is connected or wrong ide drivers installed.
4: IDE port is disabled in bios.
5: Improperly flashed firmware
6: Defective drive.

Well, if the drive worked originally and then stopped working, it's probably not going to be because the firmware magically changed itself or suffered from bit rot.

It is possible that the drive broke, failure can occur of many reasons. The drive has a replacement cost of about 20 EUR.

As likely, if not more so, is that you installed or changed your system configuration in some way to cause the drive to disappear. So consider for a few minutes what transpired between the time it worked, and the time when it stopped working.

Try the drive in another computer to determine if it works there. If it does, then it's not a drive/firmware issue, but a problem with your system.

Check that the BIOS is setup to detect the drive, see if the drive will boot a Windows install CD. If this works then you need to check that there aren't any broken drivers in your system. If you can't figure that out, then you might consider doing a fresh install of Windows, or getting a professional to fix you system.
