Have you not read the important message before downloading the patched firmware??

Please note that flashing these drives will currently not work in UDMA 4 mode. Please use PIO mode instead. Not doing so may result in an "Error submitting checksum" error message.

Also, why do you think your drive cannot burn DVD+R DL media??
And finally, which size does the downloaded firmware have?

Hi
This will sound daft but, I've been trying to burn +R DL and always get Failed Verifications and Unreadable Sectors. I thought a firmware Update might help? It may just be a bad .dmg that I'm trying to record.

I'll look into the UDMA 4 and PIO but I'm new to this jargon.
The downloaded .bin is (1,835,016 bytes)

I'm not sure if there is a way on a Mac Pro to disable DMA mode with a shortcut etc...

I think it's just cheap/bad or unsupported DVD+R DL media you are trying to burn. What media/brand is it, and rated for which speeds?
Verbatim DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media should work fine.

From the firmware description it seems that Liggy & Dee patched other 7170 firmwares with newer DVD+R DL strategies.
But maybe Liggy could tell you more about this.

The 1.N* firmwares on the AD-7170A were made for the already updated bootcode that fixes the flashing in UDMA mode.

The error message indicates that Binflash was not able to detect a firmware in the file supplied for flashing. Looks like extracting the file went wrong. I just checked the 1.N8 package at work and it looks OK on first sight, however I cannot do any flash testing since I don't have a compatible drive here. These are the md5 sums for 1.N8:
Code:
8384b592c1f90a6d0b9ca67797d0e61e *1n8_orig.bin
7e08b66005aeb7258ca0c1e6475238e1 *1n8_rpc1.bin

However I doubt that downgrading firmware from 1.NC to 1.N8 will increase compatibility.

Hi Liggy

Yes Checksums are the same as mine. No worries I'll try Verbatim DVD+R DL, this will be my third make of DVD. If this fails then I'll get another .dmg to burn.

Thanks for all your advice too.
