ala42: I've managed to reaquire Ben11's matshita firmware dumper and i'll have access to a UJ-898 drive mac tomorrow. Do you still need a firmware dump of this drive?

EDIT: Mods, would you like a copy of an intel mac pre-compiled version of the matshita dump program for inclusion on this site?

Yes, do not have it yet.

No, we will make an improved version available soon.

Hi: I've checked all relevant threads in the Macintosh Specific Section, and I'm a bit confused. Is it still the case that the patches can only be added using 10.4 or earlier? If so I'm stuffed, as I'm running 10.6.2 and don't have any earlier versions. Here's the info you guys need to be able to advise me:

1) Check and ensure your request has not already been asked for

Done this as far as I can see.

2) Post information about your drive, model, firmware revision, mac model/OS

Vendor: MATSHITA
Model: DVD-R UJ-857
Firmware: HAEA
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is LAST CHANCE
4 vendor resets left
1 region change left
Region 1

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1

Running OSX 10.6.2

3) What you require, original firmware, RPC1 patched etc.

I'm looking for the RPC1 patched firmware. I've downloaded the one from rapidshare.com and when I double-click it, I'm told I can't run it from this OS.

Can some generous soul put me wise to an alternative copy or a workaround please.

//James

ala42,

=D> I didn't dare believe that a patch would ever be created for my MacBook Pro (UJ-868). This has made my year! I can't possibly thank you enough! =D>

The file you provided has about the double size it should have, please remove it.

Thanks to all who have tried to help me, including ala42 who sent me a pm. Here's some new information.

I've tried to run the Superdrive update which tells me that I don't need to run this software. Thought that that was what I missed yesterday evening. I hadn't done it before - had forgotten that it was to be done first.

I've d/ld the Matshita flasher which appears to start ok. In accordance with the instructions I have then dragged and dropped two different versions of UJ-857 HAEA onto the flasher and in both cases this is what I get:

quote
/Users/james/Downloads/MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit;
MacBook:~ james$ /Users/james/Downloads/MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit;

simple_flash V 1.02 compiled at Jan 24 2010 23:37:23
flash data appears to be too short

logout

[Process completed]
unquote

One version is the one sent to me my ala42, is called UJ-857_HAEA_Stock_RPC1 and is 1.5 MB on disk after unzipping. The other is the one I downloaded from rapidshare.com, is called UJ-857 HAEA region free firmware and is 10 MB on disk. Does all this help anyone to understand my problem?

I've checked again and my drive status is the same as originally posted.

BTW, thanks to all who take the time.

You have to drag a .dat firmware file, size is ~740kb. Probably you dragged the directory.

That did it. Thanks ala42. I had tried that with the other d/l, not the one you sent. Now I tried it with yours and I'm cooking with gas!

Thanks. The UJ-898 firmware differs a bit from the others, so I had to adapt the patch a bit, which I have to recheck first.

Sorry about that, Figured the firmware was the size of the string between < > but the size of the firmware is clearly defined in the header of the firmware + 30h for the header at least in this case. I will make sure to include that in the program that strips it out next time and sorry again.

This one should be correct I would think.. only posting it to make sure and in case someone still needs it.

The safety improved simple_flash used in the MatshitaFlasher package linked in the first post checks header length vs. file length and checksum, something you should add to your flasher, too.

After installing Snow Leopard my Superdrive Matshita UJ-857E was updated from ZA0E to ZF1E firmware. Since the update my drive is not reading any movie DVDs anymore. I've tried the RCP-1 (ZF1E) firmware updates to fix the problem. The update was installed successfully, but the problem still exists. I recovered the original ZF1E firmware, but still no result. Can I recover firmware version ZA0E again? Powerbook-fr.com offers the ZA0E firmware, but it is not able to downgrade from ZF1E. Hope you can help me!

Here system information (sorry, Dutch):

Modelaanduiding: MacBook3,1
Processornaam: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processorsnelheid: 2,2 GHz
Aantal processors: 1
Totaal aantal cores: 2
L2-cache: 4 MB
Geheugen: 4 GB
Bussnelheid: 800 MHz

DVD Info:

Vendor: MATSHITA
Model: DVD-R UJ-857E
Firmware: ZF1E
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is SET
4 vendor resets left
4 region changes left
Region 2

MdH:

It's possible to extract the firmware from the package, by right clicking, selecting Show Package Contents, then have a good look through for a file called "ZA0E".

I've no idea if reflashing it with simple_flash will work, so be careful. Reflashing with that firmware will hopefully make it work again. If not, your drive is probably a brick.

Does anyone else have a less risky solution?

EDIT: To correct spelling and solution.

The original simple_flash allows to send the data to the drive, which probably refuses to flash the data as it does not match the expected firmware format. The safety improved version used in the flasher package linked in the first post rejects such files.

On a UJ-868 drive flashing back from KB19 to KA14 solved the problem. Even upgrading to KB19 with the Apple 3.0 update worked fine later.
Flashing back to a ZA0E firmware in correct format did not solve the problem in this case.

I wonder who told you to crossflash your drive with that wrong firmware?!

Read the thread rules in post #1 and apply to them.

Hello, I hope I am not breaking any forum rules here but I would like to confirm something....
I also have Matshita UJ-898 HA07 posted by iping.
May I assume it is on the queue to be worked on, and I just need to be patient?
Many thanks,
William
