Can you post a copy of the firmware (original + RPC1) for us please? There are some UJ-8A8 drives around with firmware HB13 on board, so having a new version of the firmware available is always good! Thanks!

PS. You can upload the files to a free host such as mediafire.com and then post the link(s) in here.

I'm not so much interested in Region locks as I am removing the automatic checksum correction on sectors with bad checksum when burning a disc. Yes, I *DO* want to burn bad checksums from an image to disc.

Any thoughts on this, or since I'm an embedded programmer, anyone care to share or point out to me their tools and methods of disassembling the firmware? Does IDA Pro support disassembly of the firmware?

This may seem like a silly question, but if like cvs wrote, you have a UJ-8A8 drives with HB13, is there any benefit to going to HB14 if you have already successfully made it Region free?

If there is, does one simply flash with the RPC-1? :?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi all,
I also have a new (= late 2011) power book, running Mac OSX Lion, but with a HL-DT-ST GS31N drive. As the other users above, if I run "./matshita_test_dump", I only get "compiled at Jan 25 2010 00:02:51" back.

The output of DVDInfoX3 is:
Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Model: DVDRW GS31N
Firmware: TA17
Status: RPC-2 (Region Locked)
Region: 1
Changes left: 4
Vendor resets left: 4

I'd be grateful to know if there is a patched firmware for the above drive.
Thanks very much.

Hi All..

I've downgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.5 from Lion just to run the matshita mem dump and still i can't manage to open it, i also updated rosetta and still when opening mem dump, it does it in Terminal and gives me this..:

Last login: Thu Dec 1 14:20:41 on ttys000
/Users/me/Desktop/matshita_mem_dump ; exit;
My-MacBook:~ me$ /Users/me/Desktop/matshita_mem_dump ; exit;compiled at Jan 25 2010 00:02:51
logout

[Process completed]

I have checked the previous posts and beside that guy who didn't want to install rosetta in his mac i really couldn't find anything relative to my issue.
This is quite a good start for someone who wants to flash his drive..:-) can't even open a mem dump.

Thanks in advance for reading this.

Newer firmware, which presumably includes some bug fixes and/or better media support?

Besides, given how rare Matshita OEM firmware updates tend to be, which would imply that they don't release a firmware just for the sake of it, but because they have to, when you get one its more of a matter of celebrating rather than questioning if you should apply the update or not.

I got that.

My question is do I apply the firmware update and then re-flash?

So, that's it.
Go home and play with your balls if you like.
What you posted is no question - but even that is too high for your ignorant mind.....

Is it certain that flashing firmware requires a full bootcamp partition as bugmenot's helpful guide says? Or can it be done under VMWare/Parallels?

From what I've read, the latest VMWare & Parallels versions should work indeed.

from previous versions parallels for some drives, never gave full access to allow flashing or dumping. Hopefully newer version has addressed this.

Hi all,

Really stupid question -

I have followed the instructions in this forum and flashed the firmware. After this, I checked with DVD Info X and it says my status is RPC-1 (region free). I'm pretty happy with this! I have Region X ready and waiting to go, too.

I was just wondering whether something should also be displaying in my system preferences about being region-free (you know, just to be doubly sure). It looks the same as it did before the flash.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the noob question.

p.s. for those playing at home, if this has worked successfully, it was accomplished while running OS 10.6.8...

Dear all,

There seems to be a lot of confusion about whether following the instructions in the first post of this thread work on a Mac running a system version higher than 10.6.4. -- at least, I find it confusing. I've just successfully patched two laptops running 10.6.8 without either downgrading or using windows. So here's what worked and didn't work for me.

The versions of the tools provided in the first post of this thread didn't work. I get exactly the same errors as many people who posted here: DVD Info X doesn't produce any info, and running MatshitaFlasher results in an error "fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device."

I however found different versions of the same tools that do work on 10.6.8. DVD Info X 3 displays the drive information, and another version of MatshitaFlasher linked from this blog post successfully patched the drive for me.

The two drives I patched are UJ-898 HA07 and UJ-8A8 HA 13. For the latter, I couldn't find the firmware in your database, but google told me to look over there.

Apologies in advance if this a stupid question, but...

I have carefully read and absorbed as much information in this thread as I think is required and I'm having no luck.
The patches just don't work, in the terminal window it tells me I don't have a matshita drive (I do).
I assume this is due to mac OS upgrades making this process null ?

I'm running 10.6.8 on a core 2 dual Macbook pro, drive is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898: HC-10 firmware.

Any help gratefully received.

Elliot.

Read the whole thread, patching this drive were discussed before.

It's interesting that more and more posts start with "sorry for my stupid q" ....
