Hello all, and I'm glad to have found this site! I have a 2006 Mac Pro that shipped with a Pioneer DVR-112D. With the help of this how-to

Quote:
To keep things as simple as possible, DVRFlash and the firmware file(s) should be side by side in the same folder, whatever it's name or position.
So, put DVRFlash and the firmware file{s) in one folder and have that folder's Finder window open.
Start "Terminal". (Double click Terminal's icon, do NOT double click DVRFlash!)
From the Finder window, drag DVRFlash into the terminal window. The complete path to DVRFlash will appear, followed by a space.
Now type "-f PIONEER " without the quotes; mind the spaces before and behind PIONEER.
Drag the firmware file into the terminal window. If you got two files (firmware and kernel), drag them both, one after the other. The path(s) to the firmware file(s) will appear in the term window.
(That way you created a command line with complete pathes, that works, no matter where all your files are.)
NOW press the Return key to start it all and it should work

The howto:- With thanks to Mike for providing this

and the files provided here:

here is the kernel and firmware files for the 112

I was able to cross-flash (I think that's what I did) the DVD drive and update the ancient firmware that shipped with the drive when I bought it in early 2007 to firmware version 1.24. In the hardware profiler, the model signifier changed from DVR-112D to DVR-112. I am pleased with the results, as DVD rips go a bit faster, but I still am unable to burn most DL-DVD blank media at higher than 3x, so I was hoping to be able to update the firmware even more. I tried to flash it again with a firmware version 1.29 file I found on here, but to no avail. It didn't work. Every time I tried something, it ended up with the drive stuck in kernel mode with version 0000, requiring me to do the cross-flash again to get it back into version 1.24. Could anyone help me with updating the firmware further, possibly to 1.28 or 1.29? I am an amateur here for sure, but I'm not seeing any other firmware files other than the firmware version 1.24 files I quoted above, so any help in locating newer files is much appreciated! Thanks!

where did you download this 1.29 file? the last was 1.28

http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=category&id=1104

you can download it from the database, either use DVRFlash to update it, or use MCSE to patch the flasher, to allow same to same flashing, if you haven't got patched firmware on the drive, then just run the update, out of curiosity what brand DL have you?

thank you for the reply. Right now I'm using Philips. I see the site you directed me to has Windows .exe files. How do you I use them on my Mac?

you would need to extract the firmware from the exe, and then use DVRFlash, give me a min, i can extract it and upload it for you

http://files.rpc1.org/uploads/A0013001.128.zip

once download rename it, delete the .zip of it, and that should give you the firmware 1.28, then you DVRFlash

I am not able to (or just can't figure out how to) unzip the file. When I download it with safari, it says "decompression failed". I try to open it and nothing happens. When I try to open (extract it?) it with betterzip, nothing happens. when I try with Zipeg, it tells me that it is an unsupported format. Maybe the file is corrupt or something? Maybe I'm not doing it right?

I thought he meant delete the .zip suffix from the filename rather than try to unzip it?

yes this is right, if you can unzip/extract then just download, and extract the firmware from the official pioneer download

These Philips DVD+R DL are still only burning at 2.4x... Frustrating. I used Memorex previously, which burned faster (8-10x), but I did end up with more coasters than I would've liked. I have only gotten one coaster out of 9 tries with these Philips discs, but it it feels like it takes FOREVER to burn a disc. Any suggestions on ways to get these babies to burn a little more quickly?

there defaulting to 2.4x speed, as there media code isn't in the firmware, if you have another drive that can see the true burning speeds, you could try importing it into the firmware with MCSE

don't buy anymore, memorex are useless also, as your burning failures show, if you can buy verbatim

Where do you guys buy your verbatim DVD-DL media? I'm fine with buying packs of up to 50, if I can get a decent per disc price.

Also you may want to consider buying a small pack first to test the burning speed versus buying 50 first. I buy no name and I get great speeds on DL burning or any type disc burning. Some may say those discs won't work after 3-4 years so I just popped a few into my Pioneer 116D and a 111D both flashed to regionfree and they were burned 3-4 years ago on a 108D, I think, and they still work. Everyone will have a different opinion on this and a varied experience.
