I recently bought a replacement UJ-846C for a friends 2006 20" imac and when I check the drive with system profiler it reports it as a uj-846s dvd-ram. The outside label states the drive as being a uj-846c but it looks like the firmware is diifferent. What i want to know is it safe to flash it with uj-846c rpc1 firmware or even with apple superdrive 2.1 or 3.0?

Is this a new drive or a cheap used drive ? I have some doubts that the firmware causes the MacOS writing problems. Try it in an Windows environment. If it still fails, the drive simply is defective.
