Hi
New here, so please forgive if I'm in wrong place.

I'm looking for a region free firmware update for a Matshita UJ-850S for Toshiba Notebook L350D-11D.

Is this the right thread?

Also, I have no idea how to check what firmware version I have.

Cheers
Tom

Hi I've read the rules, thanks I have found firmware for my MacBook Pro MATSHITA UJ-85J "FAV1" unfortunately I get this message when I try to run it: OSX Version Not Compatible, This version of OSX you are running (10.5.6) is not compatible with this firmware update. Update OSX and try again"
I noticed that the README text included with this firmware states: These updaters must be run from Mac OS X (v10.3.9 Panther, v10.4.6 or
later Tiger).
I don't have Tiger or Panther - I guess without an obsolete OS I'm outta luck ? is there a way to trick the firmware into thinking i'm running 10.4.6 or 10.3.9 ?

Fellow Human Beings Please help me.

you've got to trick the installer into thinking that you are running 10.4.6 or 10.3.9. Just change the software version info in the file as described earlier in this thread.

I don't have a macintosh but I'd still like to try making my Matshita drive region free.
Do you think that it could work if I make my Acer Aspire 5652 to a Hackintosh and then use the tools provided in this thread?
The drive is a Matshita UJ-845S, DiscInfo here:

If you guys thinks that the hackintosh method is promising, I'll give it a shot. After all, every 5652 owner would benefit from the effort.

It should be easier to port the simpleflash utility to windows and extract the firmwares from the apple packages.

Hmm does simpleflash require MacOS or should it run in Linux as well?
Although I am a coder I am not really familiar with porting from OSX to Win32.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone behind the firmware updates (esp. Ben11)! Successfully updated my drive today, as shown in the pics below.

Few problems that I thought I would post...could help someone else!
* My drive is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857, and had a HAE4 firmware. I am running OS X 10.5.7. I understood that I had to upgrade this to HAEA first using the superdriveFWUv2.1 update. When I tried to run this, it installed the update in the utilities folder, but this program would not run. It would instantly quit, with no dialogue box displayed.
*I read on the forums about changing the systemversion.plist file, but the firmware update still didn't run. Booting in safe mode also made no difference.
*I also tried running "Update HAEA to region free" (contained within the UJ-857 HAEA region free firmware file I downloaded from http://www.powerbook-fr.com/dossiers/dv ... cle30.html). Same problem...instantly quitted. I tried different OS X versions in the systemversion.plist but still no luck.....

So I tried the other way that I had read on this forum...using the older "simple flash" method in terminal, and directly flashed the HAEA RC1 firmware that Ben11 has posted. Instant success!! I have not yet tried burning a CD or DVD, but reading DVD's and changing regions works perfectly. THANK YOU!!!

Hi,

Just a hint for those who've upgraded to Leopard and want to flash their drive's firmware.

Use Terminal and login as a super user and edit the following file in Nano.

/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

Edit the 10.5.5 to 10.4.9 within the file (both instances) and save the file. Then run the firmware updater. Once it is finished, open the SystemVersion.plist file again and change the 10.4.9 back to 10.5.5 and resave the file. Once you're done reboot. Easy.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>ProductBuildVersion</key>
<string>9F33</string>
<key>ProductCopyright</key>
<string>1983-2008 Apple Inc.</string>
<key>ProductName</key>
<string>Mac OS X</string>
<key>ProductUserVisibleVersion</key>
<string>10.5.5</string>
<key>ProductVersion</key>
<string>10.5.5</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Cheers,

Donald

I tried this and it didn't work and I made the mistake of restarting my computer with this systemversion.plist edited already to 10.4.9 instead of what it was before 10.5.7 and now my computer won't restart at all, it doesn't get to the login screen either. I tried putting in my Leopard install disc and running 'Archive and install' and after waiting for a few hours to reinstall Leopard, I restarted the comp and still didn't work, same thing. Did a DiscUtility repair disc after that, didn't work. Put in my old Powerbook disc and ran 'Apple Hardware Test' and it came up with an error detected at startup 'post/o/2048 SODIMMO/J25 LOWER'

What can I do to fix this without havin to lose all my data? Is there a way to access the systemverion.plist file through terminal and change it back to 10.5.7? Can anyone help at all??

You can access Terminal from the Mac OS X DVD.
After booting from the DVD select your language and wait until the main install windows appears; then from Utilities in the Menu Bar select Terminal an then type
Quote:
pico /Volumes/'your HD'/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
replacing 'your HD' with your boot disk name and voila!
If you want you can use another file editor (like vi or nano) instead of pico.
Good luck!

This sdoesn't work for me (using Leopard)... after editing the plist file to the lesser version and saving it and then running the update/flash it returns the message "the update was unsuccessful"

So, no joy for this girl! :(

I've read this and several other threads but most of it is way over my head.
I just know I don't have a region free dvd drive and that I cannot find a fix for my drive type.
Sorry but I'm not a techy expert.
