I love Mac but when i cannot watch season 6 of Sopranos on VLC or DVD Player because it is not region free. Then I get angry! So no solutions on Leopard?

I've discovered that the matshita_mem_dump utility works fine, so am now hoping that the simpleflash utility will also work correctly. But I need the raw .dat file containing the FAV1 RPC1 firmware in order to try it. Can anyone who has successfully flashed a UJ-85J FAV1 drive please run the matshita_mem_dump and post the resulting .dat file? (Assuming that can be flashed back to another drive?) Alternatively, anyone got any idea how to extract it from the "UJ-85J FAV1 region free firmware" package? kurtar00 wrote: Could anyone help me out with an answer to the below post? I get the same results when trying to run the UJ-85J FAV1 firmware patch. I also got the same results trying to run it in Safe Mode, which supposedly disables the DVD drive. Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue. I get two windows with "Device Busy" and one window with "No updateable Devices Found".

You can not flash the mem dump file this way, do not try that. Quote: Alternatively, anyone got any idea how to extract it from the "UJ-85J FAV1 region free firmware" package?
Read your PM.

Hello Ben,
Pardon me if I missed it but I have been looking around this forum for version D100 firmware for UJ-845S on Qosmio-G20. I follow many download links on RPC1.org but each link just return me to the index page. I must have missed something obvious. Could you kindly point me to the right direction?
My situation. My UJ-845S is very unstable at reading CD-R and CD-RW. It even experiencing random problem writing to CD-R. The problem started since I flashed it with D102. I am hoping of restoring it back to D100. Hence, I am looking for version D100 firmware of it.
Thanks, Chopchop

Thanks, Chopchop Please explain this a little bit. What is the problem during read & write exactly?

Can you go over the links and procedures again to see what i am missing?
RPC-2 (region locked) State is PERMANENT 4 vendor resets left 0 region change left Region 1 solerfuture It appears to me that the reason that your unlocking was unsuccessful is that you have "0 changes left." You absolutely have to do the unlocking while you still have 1 or more changes left. Denny

Hello
I own the UJ-85J with the FAV1 (RPC1 Firmware). Is it possible to change this Firmware to the latest FM0S or will this not work on the drive?
When it works is their a way to restore the original Firmware later?
Regards Gérard

i have firmware UJ-846 FQ3T and downloaded the right patch. But it tells me that my system version 10.5.5. is too new?? Vendor: MATSHITA Model: DVD-R UJ-846 Firmware: FQ3T RPC-2 (region locked) State is LAST CHANCE 4 vendor resets left 1 region change left Region 1ps. i started reading this thread as my drive got set to region 2, and even though i have one switch left, it didnt let me do it to switch back to region 4. So i tried region x but that requires a region free drive. So i found the region free firmwares here, got my right patch (FQ3T) but now its the osx version 10.5.5. which is not letting me do it... Please help

How about the UJ-867 next. Just bought a new (previous gen) MacBook Pro and would love to have it join my old 12" PowerBook in region free bliss. Right now, I use the old PB to rip foreign DVDs and then recode them as Region 1. Annoying and slow, but it works.

[_chef_] wrote: That is a really tricky case. 2 changes left would be the key here... Probably you need to find someone with an older OS version. Thank you for your reply - But what would i do with someone who has an older OS ?? Do you mean to downgrade my whole system?

You could take an older OS computer, such as a MacBook running Tiger, and have that machine access your iMac and its DVDRW drive through Target Disk Mode. Not sure if that would work for flashing, but worth a try.

Hi,
Just a hint for those who've upgraded to Leopard and want to flash their drive's firmware.
Use Terminal and login as a super user and edit the following file in Nano.
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
Edit the 10.5.5 to 10.4.9 within the file (both instances) and save the file. Then run the firmware updater. Once it is finished, open the SystemVersion.plist file again and change the 10.4.9 back to 10.5.5 and resave the file. Once you're done reboot. Easy.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>ProductBuildVersion</key> <string>9F33</string> <key>ProductCopyright</key> <string>1983-2008 Apple Inc.</string> <key>ProductName</key> <string>Mac OS X</string> <key>ProductUserVisibleVersion</key> <string>10.5.5</string> <key>ProductVersion</key> <string>10.5.5</string> </dict> </plist>
Cheers,
Donald

Donald, you're the man - thanks for saving me the headache of possible going through a real downgrade and all... So easy and works fine. I made the mistake and closed the terminal after the first change! Then i couldnt open terminal anymore and after the restart from the firmware, nothing would work anymore. Terminal told me that it cant work under 10.4.9 and many other programs! I then used it as external drive and changed the file with just text-edit. Reboot, all good. I think you dont even need terminal to do the changes, neither the superuser. All fine and happy free region drive. Thanks again, T

Donalds, thank you, worked fine, and thank you ibeniezr, no need to go thru terminal, tet edit orked fine. Upgrade was okay. Does someone know how to check on a 10.5.5 system if it's well RPC1 now. System profiler doesn't provide this info.

I must be messing up somewhere for I've tried your suggestion with the following result.
MacBook Pro Leopard 10.5.6 Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 HAEA State is set 3 vendor resets left 4 region changes left Region 3
1. Used Terminal and logged in as a super user 2. Edited it with Nano 3. Double clicked on "Update HAEA to region free" 4. The application will not open
2nd Method: 1. Copied SystemVersion.plist to the desktop and opened with Textedit and modified to 10.4.9. 2. Trashed the SystemVersion.plist still in CoreServices 3. Replaced with the modified one from the desktop 4. Double clicked on the firmware update 5. The application will not open
3rd Method: 1. Rebooted with SystemVersion.plist as 10.4.9 2. The application will not open 3. Used TimeMachine to restore the original SystemVersion.plist
Any Ideas?
ibenizer
How did you set up your internal DVD as an external? Perhaps this is a method to get around the application not opening.
Thanks,
Bluey

well, after i fu**ed up the system, i used my laptop as external harddrive in firewire mode, rebooting by pressing t
But i guess you dont need to do that as you could fix everything to normal using timemachine.
I could change the systemVersion.plist file with any texteditor like simple text and then just overwrite (yes, save it right there) to let the app think it runs under 10.4.9 If the app wouldnt open, maybe you have the wrong flashing app? Find out what version you need by using system profiler.
Cheers
