I just purchased this DVD-ROM off ebay. I put it in my machine this morning, put in a Wii game, opened RawDump 2.0, hit "start dump" and it responds with "Fail!! DVD drive may be faulty!!"

I searched through these forums, and found similar things that were fixed by flashing an updated firmware. My dvd drive has firmware v 18.

So I grabbed the upgrade to v 33, put on a dos-boot-disk, restarted, loaded dos
typed: flashup2.exe a:\0033S.DLD
then it responds: "no cd/dvd model drive dvd-rom gdr8162b. [4]"

Can anyone help me get this to flash to 33 .. or better yet, let me know if this would even fix the problem of RawDump 2.0 not being able to make a backup of my game.

Thanks,
immortals :|

edit:
I read a little more, and some ppl say that with that error to try FriiDump instead of RawDump. That true?

Remove himem.sys from the startup/disk.

will try when I get home tonight, thanks.

Do you think updating the firmware from v18-->33 would fix the issue w/ RawDump?

if you have a hardware issue, flashing the firmware will not help

word, well, I will try a few "work-arounds" with RawDump / FriiDump
otherwise will return to the guy and get a diff. drive

edit:
damn, now when I try to run FriiDump ... I get this error:
"Retrieving disc seeds, this might take a while... Failed"
then it quits.

This sound like a bad drive to you guys?

Yes.
Maybe you could try on another computer.

got a new drive, rawdump / friidump say same errors as before

no way can be 2 faulty drives in a row

both have firmware v 18 --> should it be upgraded to enable backing up games?

edit:

I was able to get FriiDump to work by using it in safe mode for Vista
seems like rawdump persists with the "faulty drive" error in safe/regular modes.

Edit #2:
All working here. RawDump 2.1 is backing up games without issue.

I really doubt you have "the same prtoblem".
Your problem is either the not supported enclosure or a failed OS/driver.

Hi

I had exactly the same problem, I bought an 8162b with firmware v18 off Ebay and whenever I hit 'Start Dump' in RawDump it either said 'error your drive may be faulty' or 'unhandled exception has occurred in your application'.

Eventually I figured out the drives region hadn't been set.

To set this (on XP) go to 'Control Panel', 'Performance and Maintenance', 'Administrative Tools' then 'Computer Management'. Then under 'Storage' click on 'Disk Management', now right click on the correct drive and select 'Properties'. You will now see a 'DVD Region' tab, click that and select your country.

Since setting mine to United Kingdom (Region 2) it has worked perfectly and I now regularly back up games in 1hr 40min!!!

I hope it works for you! :D
