I don't understand the readme file for the firmware for the MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR 8585. Can anyone provide me with a detailed instruction on how to update my 1W26 firmware to the 1X30 that will make my drive region free. Would anyone be able to give me a detailed instruction of this process for a computer running Windows 2000 Professional? Thanx A lot

Since I don't use W2K, I am not exactly sure you can boot to a DOS prompt. If not, you may want to flash your 8585 as follows on another Win9x/ME machine. The most tricky part is to select the region (any) first. This may sound very strange but it is necessary. I tried to flash the RPC-1 firmware BEFORE selecting a region and it actually made things even worse. PowerDVD reported region 0 and refused to play any DVDs due to region mismatch (of course). Fortunately, I have the ORIGINAL RPC-2 on hand. I flashed it back to 'factory state'. I then ran PowerDVD with RPC-2 firmware. I selected region 1 and played the DVD. Next I re-flashed the RPC-1 firmware again and it has been working fine so far ... ;)

(1) You cannot boot Win2K into DOS which is why you have to create a "Real DOS" boot disk. (2) Making your drive region-free is essential if you want to use cheap DVDs imported from other regions
