I'll think you'll find a lot of people use the Pioneer drives. You can get the 110 for around

Benq DW 1640 is a good writer, other suggestions are the NEC 3540, or the pioneer 110, other one's to consider are the liteon and sony drives, depends on what you want out of your drive, rpc1, bitsetting etc

IMO, Lightscribe is too costly and too slow compared to Labelflash.
Labelflash will come with new NEC models, not available yet...

Wit good media you can achieve almost acceptable and good results with actual drives from the few big players on the market:
BENQ, LG, LITEON, NEC, PIONEER, PLEXTOR (partly Benq), (SONY >>> Liteon/BENQ), SAMSUNG/TOSHIBA.

LG

They are good reliable drives, two to consider are the 4163 and 4167

A lot of magazines are/were recommending Plextor drives. However, I was never able to locate one in a store (not the web) locally (Canada).

Ended up getting an LG 4163B (GSA-4163B) retail unit. Does most DVD formats. Also, The Dangerous Brothers do have a RPC1 version of the firmware.

also rpc1 for the 4167 and not forgetting the facility of altering media burning speeds

the sony is a good burner, rpc1 depends on which model you get, the sony 810 has no rpc1 as yet, the LG is a nice burner, only downside is the lack of 12x option on dvd-r media

Aren't the Sony drives re-packaged OEM versions of BenQ drives?

The new Sony 810 is an oem of Benq DW 1640, but without a firmware release you cannot get an rpc1 firmware

JBLsource has had a bad experience with BenQ drives. Not sure if he has the equalvant model to the Sony drive. I would go with the LG models.

Sony burners are OEM of BenQ ??

Now that has caught my eyes!!

HowZ the build qualiy just that it don't matter but still!!

Here it diff to get some good media, & i have to relay upon what i get!! So thats Y i have to carefully select a drive which burns all, even the lamest media...

I don't care much about region free .... I have additional DVD-rom with region free...

the 810 and its external version are the only oem benq drives, they are not to bad on performance, found the burns very good, no rpc1 etc at the moment is the only downside, but you can crossflash the drive to a 1640 benq and again these

debatable what it is, obviously most dvd players don't play the dvd ram discs, for now the DVD+/-R is the better
