i am currently in asia and will not return to the united states for another week. i'd really like to watch a special documentary i bought...i can wait till i get back if there is nothing that can be done...i just thought this would be the place to ask. am i asking to much? i thought i had made a pretty good effort to follow the forum rules and have read many pages trying to follow the detailed instructions. i'm just puzzled because the flash went fine but it cannot recognize the disc. i will stop posting if this is a problem. i hope i haven't offended anyone.

Read some of this long thread's posts, got mixed info. I've got a machine with UJ8A7AS. It's not listed in compatible devices, so I have no idea if flash will brick it. Dump, however, works (somewhat)*: ---- Windows dumper for Matshita DVD drives V1.02 by ala42, based on ben11's dump_mat shita
Enter the drive letter of the Matshita drive to backup the firmware: D: You have selected the source drive D:
dump_matshita V 0.2 Appear to have a matshita device MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ8A7AS 1.00 dump 1 change_vendor_mode: rc 256 tries 2 dump 2 dump 3 dump 4 Reading a portion of the memory of the drive, assuming 32 bit address space Finished reading firmware dump from drive change_vendor_mode: rc 256 tries 2 converted firmware to flashable file MATSHITADVD-RAM_UJ8A7AS_1.00.dat converted RPC1 firmware to flashable file MATSHITADVD-RAM_UJ8A7AS_1.00_RPC1.dat ---
Long story short, is flashing safe? And if not, is there anything coming up for this device?
Cheers. //Win764, Matshita DVD-RAM UJ8A7AS, Sony Vaio S13p

Yes it should be OK. The fact that the tool has successfully dumped the firmware without any errors and then created both the encrypted/compressed flashable firmware files file means that you're in luck and your drive is supported. If the content of the dump would have been all rubbish, neither of the two files would have been created... I'm sure ala42 said that before a while back, probably in this thread actually... Besides, we know already that the software works OK with the UJ8A8 models, so given that and the above I think it is a safe bet to assume that your drive is supported too ... Could you upload a copy of those files for us and post a link in here? Maybe send ala42 a PM once you posted the firmware just to be 101% sure?

Have you tried running the *.bat file with Admin privileges, just to rule out any Windows rights issue? Right click on the *.bat file and then Run as administrator... If that doesn't work either then you're out of luck, and by the looks of it your drive is too new, somehow different than the 'standard ones' and not supported ...

uj8a7as as requested by cvs, could you please share the link or upload these files:
file MATSHITADVD-RAM_UJ8A7AS_1.00.dat file MATSHITADVD-RAM_UJ8A7AS_1.00_RPC1.dat
Is everything still working for you with your UJ-8A8? Any issues?
I also have a MacBook Pro with the UJ-8A8 drive.
Thanks!

Hello All, I have a Matshita UJ-846s that is giving me grief. I flashed it to F102 but to no avail. I have been wading in the forums but I have spotted nothing about how I might resolve resolve this other than to put the stinking thing under the heel of my boot.
I am running XP SP3.
Do you have any ideas?

If anyone else has the same laptop & needs it msg me or ala42 for the modified MatshitaWinDump tool. Regards, Shane. Yes, i have the same Laptop & needs it (modified MatshitaWinDump tool). Thank you!

What is your problem NOT to follow his advice?? "msg me" does not mean you shall post here - it means you should send him or ala a PM!!

Greetings, I've read through this thread carefully the whole way through. I have an Acer Aspire 5742 with a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ890AS 1.00. As far as I have been able to gather from this thread, there is no hope for this drive even though in the description it says there is support for UJ-89x drives.
I was just wanting to either confirm this, have an update or be told I need to open my eyes more and read the forum closer.
I get the following: dump_matchita v 0.1 Appear to have a mashita device MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ890AS 1.00 dump 1 change_vendor_mode:rc -2 tries 101 error during attempt to read memory from device \\.\d:

What the first post states is that it should be possible for me to dump and flash my DVD-RAM, however what i have read in this thread is that people were having trouble with doing that, as I am having trouble. I don't know which part of post #1 you are referring to that i didn't follow, could you please be more specific?

ok so i tried to read from the drive using the dump utility, and the read process succeeded, but the conversion failed with this error. i have the code it spat out: Code: Windows dumper for Matshita DVD drives V1.02 by ala42, based on ben11's dump_mashita
Enter the drive letter of the Matshita drive to backup the firmware: D You have selected the source drive D

After using Mat****aWinDump four different times (generating a total of 8 files), no two unpatched firmware images had the same md5 hash.
The drive is a Ma****ta UJ 898.
The computer is a MacBook 7,1 (A white plastic one with rounded edges), so there is the whole EFI/BIOS compatibility layer thing going on.
The last 2 pairs of images generated were taken after completely powering the system off and turning back on without having any disc inserted in the drive. So there was no disc in the drive during that whole power cycle.
I looked at them in a hex editor, and they didn't even look remotely similar - it's as if it's reading the wrong memory location.
However, they were all exactly the same file size - 827,952 bytes.
How do I get a good backup of my firmware - HD09?
Thank you, Jake

Thank you, Jake You already have a good backup ... in fact you've got 8 good backups What you get is perfectly normal and is the result of the firmware encryption mechanism the tool uses to repackage the firmware dump into a suitable compressed/encrypted format which can be flashed back to the drive. Because of that, no two dumps will be the same on the outside in their packed form, but once they are unpacked during flashing, the uncompressed/unencrypted firmware inside will be exactly the same. There's nothing to be worried about.
