Hello,

I am all but a computer expert but I do have the same problem with the LG drive on my Macbook (HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N, BP10): 50% of my DVD are region 1, the others are region 2.

Therefore I downloaded your firmware for MAC OS X. When I click on it, a window in terminal pops ub and gives me the following message:

Last login: Fri May 21 23:43:03 on ttys000
/Applications/flasher ; exit;
joerg-barons-macbook-2:~ joergbaron$ /Applications/flasher ; exit;
logout

[Prozess beendet]

I rebooted the computer, however the problem with the region lock still persists: Changed it from region 1 to region 2, but even after rebooting the computer once more it didn't go back by itself to region 1 and I had to do it manually again. So I now only have 3 region changes left.

I then tried to enter the command flasher -D as you described on top of this page in terminal, as I thought I might still need to change something manually, however Terminal always gives me the response: -bash: flasher: command not found.

What do I have to do in order to get this working and get rid of the region lock on my LG drive ?

Thanks a lot !

my program does not change your firmware. you must first either dump your firmware (with my program) and use MCSE to patch it which only does a region counter reset not a rpc1 or find an official release of the firmware and do the same thing and then you can flash it with my program.

Hi everybody,

I have a bit the same problem:
When i'm running the flasher under the snow leopard console, i got the error message:
Quote:
./flasher -D
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
drive_inquiry: failed to inquiry drive info

AVAILABLE DRIVES AND IDs:

I have download it again but it's still the same.

I also run the flasher trough my virtualized Win XP and i got the message:
Quote:
C:\>flasher -D
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
drive_inquiry: failed to inquiry drive info

AVAILABLE DRIVES AND IDs:
Drive ID: 1 Name: DVDRW GS21N

which is a bit better but seems to me to be a contradiction...
My optical drive is working well...

Reference:
Quote:
Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Model: DVDRW GS21N
Firmware: SA18
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is SET

Any idea?

I'm wondering how long dumping the firmware should take? I started it as root and now it says

Quote:
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: /dev/dvdrw1.
cmd_dumpmain: Starting dumping process

for 10 minutes already. I'm using the Linux version on a 64bit Kubuntu 10.04. It's a LG GH22LP20.

GH22LP20 uses a Panasonic chipset not a Renesas one ... so your drive is not supported by this utility ...

You can apply an RPC1 patch with my MCSE tool. The easiest way to flash the firmware in under Windows.

But I cannot flash the Firmware with the MCSE tool. It creates a .dat file, how can I flash it to the drive?

I see, it creates a .dat file that I can flash onto the drive with the blah_blah_standalone.exe.
It did work, there is no region code on the drive anymore but I cannot play DVDs because they need a region code, right?

DVD Region Killer doesn't work on Windows Seven Professional N x64. It says

Quote:
Elbycheck has detected that the filter driver regkill is not installed!
This driver is required for proper operation of software made by Elaborate Bytes.
You will need to reinstall the application, which requires the driver regkill."

There seems to be no way to pretend a region code on Kubuntu. Regionset is only able to change the region code if there is one. What if I flash the original firmware onto the drive (which region code will be set then?) and change it with regionset as often as it is possible (5 times?). Do I get another 5 changes when I flash the the drive again?

Thanks for your help.

Hi all =D

I have also an "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20N" in my laptop, a toshiba model A500-14L ...

I was wondering if I need to use your flasher to flash the firmware ?! As toshiba doesn't provide a software, I thought I had to use yours ...

It's just to be sure =D I don't want to make a mistake :D

Thanks =)

You are able to dump your firmware with my tool. patch it and then re-flash it with the patched firmware if you want.

Thanks for the answer :)

so i use MSCE to patch the main_firmware.bin file (as the core one is empty lol), and then I use your tool to send the main.bin file to the dvd writer, right ?!

ok =) Thanks

edit : I've already dumped the core and main bin files ... I believe it's for security ?

dumping the firmwares are a good idea in case the drive is forced into recovery mode from a failed flash, or when there is no other firmware released for that drive. I also don't know if we have a firmware for this drive from this particular OEM company so it would be nice if you uploaded the original un-patched dumps that you made.

Again, what makes you believe that "it looks alike something" is the same as "it is the same"??

Of course feel free to shoot your drive by crossflashing. #-o

sadly there is nothing in that info that can tell me if your drive is possible to support. LG uses various chip sets and it is not always clear which one is being used by the model info. the only 100% way to know for sure is to take the case off the drive and look at the chip set on the drives circuitry. my program only supports Renesas based chip sets.
