If you would make a backup of your firmware first and post it here.. original firmwares are rare..

the program that can do it is
http://sourceforge.net/projects/flasher/files/

theres a console version and a gui version that is based on gtk

if you going to run the gtk version install the runtime from here.
http://gtk-win.sourceforge.net/home/index.php/en/Home

GUI = Graphical User Interface .. meaning it has a window that you can click on with a mouse basically
CUI = Console User Interface .. which is purely text

the GTK thing is the Backend of my program for displaying the window for you to work with.

the download for the gtk version is here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/flasher ... p/download

but for it to run you have to install the GTK runtime which download is here..
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gtk-wi ... e?download

the only reason for me using the gtk is because this program also works in linux and i dont want to maintain code for windows and linux seperately.

there will be two tabs one that allows you to flash the drive with a new firmware and one that lets you dump the main firmware.
there will be a text entry place to let you put your drive letter there.

now the console version.
the console version allows you to dump the core firmware and the main firmware.. the core firmware is very important for recovery so it is worth it.
I plan on adding all this to the GUI version later.

if you download the console version you should download it to your Desktop and extract the flasher.exe directly to your desktop.

then you need to get into a console window by the start menu and click run or you can press the windows key and r at the same time..
with the new window type in cmd and you will be in the console.

while in the console window type cd Desktop
then to actually backup your firmwares type

[drive] = the drive letter of your cdrom drive
flasher.exe -d [drive] -m main_firmware.bin
flasher.exe -d [drive] -c core_firmware.bin

eg. drive e:
flasher.exe -d e -m main_firmware.bin
flasher.exe -d e -c core_firmware.bin

if you need anymore info just ask

you dont have to use mine at all..

my program conforms on the official flashing process. so either is good.

but if you want to use my program it can rip the firmware from the other exe by doing the fallowing..

flasher.exe -r original_firmware.exe

You are using cheapo media, that is your only problem.

only way to dump core right now is to use the console based one... I am currently coding it into the gui version but it will take a bit since i was in the middle of fixing other code also.

LOL!

I suggest you just do so - buying games you want to play.

I also want to update my firmware on the GSA-T40N.
If there are any problems with the "new" firmware, how can i flash back ?

I also made a backup with the console version (main and core firmware).
Here is the Link.

Regards

Dr.W

Edit. I'm using Win 7 x86

you can either use my tool or use the dos flasher to do that.

flasher -d [drive] -f firmware.bin

I was redirected here for the flasher, but seeing it seems to be for windows, is it the console version that works on Mac OS X?

the mac version is not on the site yet.. its currently in development, I can't guarantee that it will run on your version but we can try it out.. if you want to I will upload it to a file share place and you can test it. or if your comfortable with compiling software on the Mac OS X i can send the source code..

the newer version works differently then the original since the Mac OS X does not seem to have a path I can point it to like in windows and linux..

the new version accesses the cdrom drive via the order they os recognizes them.

if you only have one drive the [drive number] will always be 1

backs up main firmware
./flasher -d [drive number] -m main_firmware.bin

backs up core firmware
./flasher -d [drive number] -c core_firmware.bin

flashes a firmware onto the drive
./flasher -d [drive number] -f official.bin

rips the firmware out of the windows exe
./flasher -r official.exe

if only one drive
./flasher -d 1 -f official.bin

let me know if you want to try out the pre-compiled or to compile from source.

here is the console/terminal version from the mac osx .. i compiled it against 10.4u sdk so it should work on any system besides power pc.. i also packed it into a universal build but i decided to omit the ppc version since its not coded into it yet..

you will have to extract it from the zip file and then run it from a terminal/console in the manner that i described above.

Hi,

First of all thanks for sharing your work.

I've bought a new Macbook Pro 13" with Snow Leopard (10.6) that comes with a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS23N revision SB00 drive.
Searching around I found this firmware.
Following this discussion it is the original firmware.
I've downloaded MCSE that I ran under Wine to patch the firmware to RPC2-autoreset.
Then, looking for a flasher to this firmware I got this thread.
I've downloaded your Mac version of flasher and did the following commands:
Code:
iLeG:Downloads vit$ ./flasher -d 1 -m main_firmware.bin
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_dumpmain: Starting dumping process
cmd_dumpmain: Dump process finished
iLeG:Downloads vit$ ./flasher -d 1 -m core_firmware.bin
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_dumpmain: Starting dumping process
cmd_dumpmain: Dump process finished
iLeG:Downloads vit$ ./flasher -d 1 -r GS23N-SB00-01.exe
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
Firm location 0x0001F000
cmd_ripexe: Finished firmware ripping process
iLeG:Downloads vit$ ./flasher -d 1 -f MAIN_GS23N-SB00-01.exe.hex
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_flashfirm: Flashing process started

firm_flasher: Drive should be flashing its light.
firm_flasher: This indicates its flashing its self.
firm_flasher: This can take a while, Please be patiant.

And it's stopped at this point since more than 15 min without finishing. It does not do any disk or cpu activity. It is safe to abort the program or is there another thing to do?

Hmmm, the flasher didn't stop after 1h so I reboot the computer.
Now the Apple System Profile doesn't recognize the driver in the same way. Before was:
Code:
HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GS23N :

  Capacité :   7,96 Go (7 961 370 624 octets)
  Modèle :   HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GS23N
  Révision :   SB00
  Numéro de série :   KZZ96RC0637
NCQ (Native Command Queuing) :   Non
  Support amovible :   Oui
  Disque amovible :   Non
  Nom BSD :   disk2
  Éteindre :   Oui
  Notification Async :   Non
  Nom du support :   MI3_FR_D1
Type de carte de partition :   Inconnu
  État S.M.A.R.T. :   Non géré

Now it's:
Code:
HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GS21N :

  Modèle :   HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GS21N
  Révision :   COR7
  Numéro de série :
NCQ (Native Command Queuing) :   Non
  Disque amovible :   Non
  Éteindre :   Non
  Notification Async :   Non

I think the firmware on the site isn't a real GS23N but a fake one based on GS21N and that's my problem.

And if I try to reflash the driver I get this error:
Code:
iLeG:DVD Patch vit$ wine MediaCodeSpeedEdit/MediaCodeSpeedEdit.exe
iLeG:DVD Patch vit$ ./flasher -d 1 -f core_firmware_speedpatched.bin
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_flashfirm: Flashing process started

firm_flasher: Drive should be flashing its light.
firm_flasher: This indicates its flashing its self.
firm_flasher: This can take a while, Please be patiant.
firm_flasher: Failed Self diag. Possibly bad drive flash!
cmd_flashfirm: Flashing process failed
iLeG:DVD Patch vit$ ./flasher -d 1 -f main_firmware_speedpatched.bin
cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_flashfirm: Flashing process started

firm_flasher: Drive should be flashing its light.
firm_flasher: This indicates its flashing its self.
firm_flasher: This can take a while, Please be patiant.
firm_flasher: Failed Self diag. Possibly bad drive flash!
cmd_flashfirm: Flashing process failed
iLeG:DVD Patch vit$

Is there another solution than buying another drive or try to tell Apple the drive is broken under warranty?

the mac osx fails on self diag.. it does not actually mean it failed.. the drive flashing its self has already finished by then..

you have to reboot your to see the changes.

I need to omit the self diag code on the mac osx because after flashing the drive is not able to be flashed again with out a reboot nor is it really accessible for some reason.

reboot your system and see what happens then.. also if you noticed in the info your drive says something about core.. that means its in recovery mode.
