Hi, my toshiba laptop won't read DVD-RW discs. I have researched this problem for hours with no joy.
Can you help? Don't want to blindly start downloading firmware when I don't really understand it.
Thanks Leesa

I should add that I am trying to burn zipped files with Nero to the DVD-RW discs to free up my harddrive. I have also tried assessing the empty DVD-RW disc with DVDInfoPro but my DVD-ROM won't read it, even though it does assess DVD-R discs. DVDInfoPro does verify that my drive should read DVD-RW discs.
Cheers Leesa

Make sure you really use UDF or UDF/ISO as Filesystem, not something like InCD.

A DVD-ROM drive cannot read nor recognize EMPTY media. A DVD-ROM should be able to read pressed and also burned & finalized CD and DVD media, but no blanks.
Your drive is an DVD-R/RW slimtype burner.

You could update your drive with firmware 1033 from here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1603

How is the DVD-RW media rated and which option and filesystem (template) in Nero do you use to burn a compilation to DVD?

Hi,
I have also now tried different media brands and tried using CDBurnerXP Pro instead of Nero. Whenever I try to burn to DVD-RW I get a message that there is no disc in drive. Could there be an actual fault with the DVD drive even though it burns to DVD-R? I recently had the drive replaced by a computer repairer due to an external physical breakage of the drive.
Cheers Leesa

Hi again,
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "how is the media rated?" I have tried using Nero burning ROM using ISO and also nero express under data disc and burn DVD. I think it's time to give up and take my laptop into a toshiba store. By the way my computer is not region free. Would you be able to suggest the download I need for my particular drive, without causing me anymore major headaches?
I also want to thank you very much for your time in replying to my nagging dilemma. You guys are fantastic.
Thanks again
Leesa

Probably not 8x. ;)

Haven't seen an 8x DVD-RW yet. Or is there one??

Is the media rated 1x, 2x, 4x or 6x?

Does this explain the message"insert media into drive" when I attempt to burn a compilation even though there is a DVD-RW disc inserted? I am able to burn to DVD-R 8x discs though!!!

Are you making fun of me now? [-X I know I'm not well versed in this area and that's why I'm posting you guys; before I head to my local computer repairer who is already rubbing his hands together at the thought of all the cash he is going to relieve me of. Although there appears to be no immediate solution to this monkey on my back, I thank you for your time and patience

PS Before I disappear and you are finally put out of your misery  is there suggested firmware that I may download to enable my DVD-ROM to be region free?

leesa,

feeding such an "old" burner with such higher rated media could easily destroy the drive.
Backfire did not make fun of you, I can assure you. :)
