OK, seems that MCSE supports your burner!

Check it out!

Hello I've downloaded MCSE and dvd identifier and I managed to patch the firmware so that the dvd with media code "MCC 004" can be burned at 8X. The patched exe is produced but, when I try to launch it, this window appears:

instead of the usual one:

I suspect that the installer has some kind of checksum which denies the update if the file doesn't have the defult one. How can I bypass this? I tried with the rpc1 version but I had the same problem.

This is a known bug in the latest MCSE version. Download the Previous V 1.0.9.6 MediaCodeSpeedEdit.zip.

Hi,

I have the same burner (LG GSA 4082B) and the same problem..

After flashing it to the latest firmware (A209), it reaches 8X writing speed with 8X certified Philips dvds. But it still burns 16X certified dvd (Verbatim DVD-R advanced azo +) at 4x.

After reading this thread,

1. I learned the media code (16X certified Verbatim DVD-R advanced azo +) with DVD Identifier.

Code:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:MCC 03RG20  ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type :       [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name :      [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.]
Manufacturer ID :        [MCC 03RG20  ]
Blank Disc Capacity :    [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
** INFO : Hex Dump Of 'Media Code'-Block Listed Below
** INFO : 4-Byte Header Preceding 'Media Code'-Block Discarded
** INFO : Format 0Eh - Pre-Recorded Information In Lead-In
0000 : 01 40 c1 fd 9e d8 52 00  02 85 0d 0e 88 9a 80 00   .@....R.........
0010 : 03 4d 43 43 20 30 33 00  04 52 47 32 30 20 20 00   .MCC 03..RG20  .
0020 : 05 88 80 00 00 00 02 00  06 09 0b 14 87 78 90 00   .............x..
0030 : 07 88 80 00 00 00 00 00  08 08 13 0d 11 0c 08 00   ................
0040 : 09 95 07 0e 0b 78 88 00  0a a0 00 20 00 20 10 00   .....x..... . ..
0050 : 0b 06 1a 17 86 67 85 00  0c 99 ab 3a 83 20 32 00   .....g.....:. 2.
0060 : 0d 00 00 d0 00 00 00 00                            ........
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V5.0.1 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. I started MediaCodeSpeedEdit 1.0.9.8 and load the A209 firmware file.

3. I selected an unused media code (DVD-R DEFAULT8 STR 8X, 4X) of the same media type from the list, and renamed it by copying the media code from clipboard of DVD Identifier and pasting it in the import part of MediaCodeSpeedEdit.

4. After clicking the set button when done, i saved the firmware.

5. I flashed the modified firmware as usual and reboot.

But it still burns 16X certified media at 4x.

How can i solve this problem?

Probably it is a bad idea to use that MID. Try again with renaming MCC 02RG20 to MCC 03RG20 by simply editing the name field and clicking on the SET button. This will disable the 8x verbatim MID, but that is a different problem.

you need to gain the media id from another drive that can identify the true media speeds

The 112 has no riplock as it reads +R/-R data and video disks both at 12x, so the riplock patch has no effect and is disabled.
Currently only the +R swaps are lossless. If you swap -R MIDs, the target MID is not available anymore.

MediaCodeSpeedEdit V1.0.9.10 is out
Code:
Changelog

1.0.9.10 12 Mar 2007
        - added support for HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H30N 1.02
        - verified support for GSA-H20/22 1.02 firmwares
        - changed behaviour of crossflash selection box for LG and Benq 1670
firmwares to avoid confusion. Box displays no drive name now if
the crossflash patch has not been applied.
        - added H42L@H42N crossflash option for GSA-H42L drives
Such a crossflash removes the Lightscribe feature as there
is currently no way back because no H42L firmware is available.
        - added support for GSA-T11N A103
Current support is read only, looking for testers.
        - enabled riplock patch for Pioneer 112 firmwares
It is still not absolutely clear if the Buffallo 112 firmwares
have a riplock at all, so it is your choice if you need the patch :)
Thanks to Mystere for the tests.
        - added support for NEC DVD+-RW ND-3650A 108C (Dell OEM)
        - added read only support for PHILIPS SPD2412T P1.4 (TSST clone)
        - added read only support for PHILIPS SPD6002T P1.2 (TSST clone)

1.0.9.9 20 Feb 2007
        - read speed and riplock patch for GSA-H42N RJ11 were not enabled in
          previous release
        - added 18x write speed display for PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112 firmwares

Download Changelog

Does anyone know the process to modify a firmware for a DVD-RW drive. More specifically, to change the security settings so that the DVD-RW laser would turn on even if there is no CD/DVD inside. I am trying to control the laser
