I preferred Pioneer over NEC 4550 because of this firmware patch, so I bought an ASUS 1608P2S, replaced my ASUS 1604p (patched with bit-setting piodata 108 firmware) and applied this patch today.
Thanks a lot ! It was very easy.
I wish that, with that firmware, drive name would be displayed as ASUS and, hence Nero CD-DVD Speed program could do PI/PO testing. Some people (not me) only have a dvd-writer (and not a DVD-Reader), so they can not check their burned dvd's for errors
It's strange that, Nero CD-DVD Speed program makes PIE/PIF checking with ASUS DVD-Writers but not with Pioneers.
But, new versions of DVDinfoPro checks PI/PO errors (not PIE / PIF) for Pioneer drives:
this is the thread that shows how reliable error - checking with Pioneer

Changing the name in the firmware is not necessary
Just delete the Pioneer name, from the blocked list in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ahead\Nero Toolkit\CD Speed\CD Quality\Blocked
Then you can do quality check with nero cd-dvd speed with Pioneer drives

Did they add new brands or what? (I can't find my usual site where they state the changes)
Edit: Ala42 tool shows more media and a changelog shows better perfomance as far as writing.
Waiting for Buffalo to release 8.39

Three posts of the same whine in three different topics? Would you like some cheese with your whine?
When you read and understand Pioneer's official DVR110_MediaList_137.pdf or DVR110_MediaList_139.pdf etc. and feel that you know more about Pioneer's drives than Pioneer themselves, then go ahead and use advanced tools like ala42's excellent MCSE, with DVD Identifier and/or other great sources of media quality tests/scans and info about CLV/CAV writing strategies etc. etc.
Then come back and post ANOTHER topic announcing that you have IMPROVED writing quality at faster speeds to what OFFICIAL PIONEER media tables do at their recommended speeds on SPECIFIC mediacodes as listed in Pioneer's PDFs.
Links for the above tools are INTENTIONALLY NOT given. Shouldn't be a problem to find them for folks that are apparently smarter than Pioneer.
SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE HAPPY as I mentioned in my previous post in this topic.

Thank you nullz for the MAXRIP firmware. I successfully force flashed my 110D to the MAXRIP firmware you provided. All went without a problem. I thought for kicks I would try to force flash back to firmware 1.39 for the 110D. I wasn't able to go back. At the end of the process I received the message to remove media from the drive before flashing. The drive was empty. Any thoughts on this?
Commandline:
./DVRFlash -vff PIONEER RB100011.139 RB100111.139
Reading firmware 'RB100011.139'...
firmware is of Kernel type (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D 1.39 )
Reading firmware 'RB100111.139'...

Yes, not related not this firmware or topic I believe. Please post full details of your MAC computer and OS specs, DVRFlash version and error logs in the Macintosh forum here and I am sure LasVegas or other Mac users (which I am not) will be able to provide more useful help.

@macripper
Are you running OSX version 10.3? If so, make sure you get the special version of DVRFlash2.2 for 10.3 (marked "Not Universal Binary") from LasVegas' page.

_Mike_
I am using OSX 10.4.4 on a 933 Quicksilver G4. I tried the non-universal binary version of DVRFlash with the same results. The drive itself is working great so its not a big concern. I will post in the Mac specific section and see if anyone has a suggestion (as per nullz's advise).

Make sure that the Pioneer DVR-110D is jumpered to Master rather than Cable Select. You might also consider starting in Safe mode by holding the Shift key during startup.

The drive is jumpered to Master. I tried flashing while in Safe Mode and got the same result. It has been suggested that I try flashing with a PC in REAL DOS. I'll give it a try after I figure out how to do it with REAL DOS. Can I flash the drive in an external firewire enclosure on a PC? Thanks for your help.

REAL DOS will not allow you to flash a burner in an external in most of all cases. But you could use the w32 version first in "DOS" under windows, from the commandline.
All infos are in the README.

If you decide to install the drive into a PC and flash in DOS, DVRFlash includes all the necessary files and instructions for their use.

to crossflash your pioneer 110D --> 110 with firmware rev1.37 + to activate DVD-RAM ability do this:
1.make a folder on desktop named DVRFlash
in this folder make sure you have:
DVRFlash
RA143010.137
RA143110.137
UPGA10.EXE
2.in terminal type this:
cd Desktop/DVRFlash
3. in terminal type or paste:
./DVRFlash -vff "A:PIONEER" RA143010.137 RA143110.137

Commandline:
./DVRFlash -vff A:PIONEER RA154010.837 RA154110.837
Reading firmware 'RA154010.837'...
firmware is of Kernel type (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110 8.37 )
Reading firmware 'RA154110.837'...
firmware is of Normal type (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110 8.37 )
Drive Information:
Description : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110
Firmware Rev : 1.37
Firmware Date : 05/11/08
Manufacturer : PIONEER
Drive is in normal mode.
Additional Drive Information:

Interface type : ATA
DVR generation : 0010
Kernel type : PIO_ADV

If the Buffalo firmware is sitting on a 20 meg HDD on a IBM XT (remember them) in a village in Siberia nullz will certainly find them.

I used the pioneer 108 before, it works great with >NIL:'s patched '1.18 RPC-1 + 12xRip + nx4all' firmware, I can burn any 4X DVD+R with 8X, never fail, but when I change to the current 110D, I tried couple patched firmwares, 1.22/1.37/1.39, all of them just recognise the true speed on my DVD+R, noway to burn with higher speed, e.g. 8X, 12X ...etc
Any good nx4all patched firmware for 110D or any suggestion?
thanks so much.
