I think I'll hold on to my DVR-109 until Pioneer releases their BDR-101.

You may be waiting a while for it....
Some articles and photo's that should NOT have been posted were recently leaked, to certain news sites. These articles were subsequently yanked from publication/taken offline. Just another example of industrial/corporate misbehaviour and social irresponsibility.
Don't expect to see Pioneer's BD-RE offering floating on your doorstep any time right away.
Having said all this, I tend to agree with you. If your 109 is working just fine and services YOUR specific needs, why would you bother with a newer drive? It's just common sense.

for me, unfortunately the 109 does not do what it is suppose to do. It is a 16x drive yet it won't properly write 16x media making the 110 a nice option.

Well I have finally bought my 110.
I have tried the following media SONY08D1 and was able to burn at 12X no worries.
Also tried some 16X verbatims MCC...... and they burn't at 16 very nicely.
Real happy with my purchase.

Just installed the 110D in my fathers computer this morning. Burned some TYG02 at rated 8x speed with no problems. Even with the stock, shipping firmware I couldn't tell the difference between the 110 and my finally up to par 109. Very nice start for the 110. Firmware updates can only make this drive better and I am looking forward to seeing how it does in the near future. Made me quite jealous and wanted to go out and pick up my own today but trying to be patient for the full 110 as DVD-RAM would be a nice thing to try out. Without a guarantee that the 110D can be flashed with 110 firmware I would rather not take that chance right now. The 110 was about an inch shorter than the 108 it replaced too.

Also there are less cooling slots than the 108 also.

They were initialy about to release 1.14 this week but shelved it together with 1.15, 1.16 & 1.17
Currently they are testing 1.18 and if it passes all the QC checks it will be released next week
