Herrie, is it possible to edit firmware for NEC 2500A so the user could burn any DVD at any recording speed(1x-8x)? I've heard about such firmware for Pioneer 107D, and I think it's interesting feature. What do you think about implementing this one as an experiment?

No, I won't support 8x for all discs, because some discs are just simply not capable of doing this. Most 4x discs will work @ 8x and several 2x discs work @ 4x now, but I don't plan to extend this. Simply due to the poor media quality of a lot of 2x discs.

Well... That and 8X media.

Wrong LV.

My firmware does 8x for ALL media.
You can pop in a 1x media in a 107 patched drive and (try to) burn it a 8x if you want.

nx4all means nx4all, i.e. ALL speeds are available for ALL media.
The only media where this does not apply is +RW, because we found out that trying to burn all +RW media at 4x (the drive's max speed for these media) was only producing coasters.

Does that mean you cannot use the "Maximum" burn-speed setting? :? I would prefer the 2500/2510 way, where manufacturers and others actually checked if the burning speed is sensible, and keep it at the default otherwise.

Well, that's what the official firmware does!
If you want to burn at the official recommended speed, don't use a patched firmware.
But if you want to have the choice of selecting ANY speed that you deem you should burn your media at, you can use the patched firmware.

The patched firmware will not force you into using any speed. It just gives you the choice. Then it's up to you to decide to use your media recommended speed or try to go a little faster (or all the way faster).

Using a patched firmware supposes you know what you want to do.

Patchers only remove limitation to give you the choice. You're still free to refuse this freedom.

Ok, that's clear. Although there probably will be more reasons why you'd use the patched firmware, so that limits the choice a little in practice. ;)

Thank-you! I stand corrected! :)
