I do not know if this is the Herrie's firmware (the new one), but I also notice my Nec was unable to burn at 8x my Verbatim 8x any longer ! I use CopyToDVD, and I was able to burn at full speed (8x) the same DVDs ... Going to test that this evening, with Nero and with the original formware. But I suppose this is CopyToDVD which does not work so well.
And here is my Paypal operation done Herrie.

Hello again! I have a weird question, and for Mac user-friendly. Indeed, I use sometimes my external NEC 2500A on my Macintosh to back up data. I do not know if somebody will be able to answer it !
Another question : I use on my Macintosh my externe drive NEC 2500A now flashed with Herrie's great firmware to burn Verbatim DVD+RW. But the burning software on my Mac, Toast Titanium 5.1.3 sees 316 Mb written on DVD, but I erased it before on my PC.
Toast refuses to erase the DVD+RW because "it have a wrong format" whereas I succeded to burn them when they were totally new !
Consequently, the DVD+RW is seen as a DVD-RW for Toast, I can not erase it and can not burn it !
I even burned something on the DVD+RW on my PC, saw that it was recognized on my Mac (DVD+RW), but was unable to erase it again !

are you sure, thats f/w is with rpc1, you can set booktype and its remove the riplock?
it seems its an original firmeware from nec. do they have different (1.07) firmwares?

@herrie, think i got it worked out now on the 8x media, i take it with copied media you cannot get 8x recording from it, soon as i put in an original disc the speeds are fine for recording, even got 8x from the ridisc
Ah you were doing 1:1 copies, that explains it
Is this the norm then, strange i can copy 1:1 copies ok full speed if i am copying from an original dvd, but if i copy 1:1 from a copy the fastest is 4

Often DVD-Roms have a limit for speed on recordable media For example LiteOn has this. There are some patches for it on http://codeguys.rpc1.org

yesterday, after i flashed my nec with your firmware and burned a dvd, there was many read errors (dvdinfopro). but the dvd was playing in stand alone dvd-player.
today i test the same dvd again and the errors not so many like yesterday.
my understanding isnt so well like yours.
great job you have done! no question!!!
im afraid to burn many errors with your firmeware.
ok i burned it with 6x, but it was a 4x (aldi-Tevion) dvd+r.
maybe this will be the problem.
will test it again with lower speed.

It gets various reviews, from OK to bad, so maybe you have some bad discs?

Well im using your new d/l firmware my cdr still dont burn @ 32x even though they are 52x certfied they only burn @ 16x and my dvd+r that used to burn @ 4x now only burn @ 2.4x its prolly better since thats what they are rated for. I burnt 2 dvd's @ 4x on this media though and one had errors (almost full disc) at the end the other had no errors (half of a disc)
heres the media codes tell me what you think
00000000 01 02 00 00 A1 0F 02 00 00 03 00 00 00 26 05 3F .............&.?
00000010 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 50 52 4F 44 49 53 43 00 52 .......PRODISC.R
00000020 30 31 01 38 23 54 37 0F 02 54 6B 02 94 63 15 15 01.8#T7..Tk..c..
00000030 0B 0A 08 08 01 1C 1E 0B 0C 12 12 01 00 00 00 00 ................
Media code/Manufacturer ID PRODISC R01
Media Product Revision Number 01h
Free Blocks 405405696
Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.70GB)
Book Type DVD+R
Media Type DVD+R
Default DVD+RW book type DVD+RW
Default DVD+R book type DVD-ROM
Media Id Code Speed 2.4x 3324KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x 3324KBps
Linear Density Blank Disc
Track Density Unknown
Number of Layers 1
And then for the CDR
its made by lead data I cant get any more info out of it than that. I have a some DL disc on the way from a buddy so ill test that as soon as I recieve it. Can you tell me why my media will no longer burn @ 4x can you take media descriptors from your other firmware and put them in this one?
Please help. Thanks herrie for your wonderful work. I will be paypalling you some monies soon.

I do appriciate Herrie spending his time on helping out on the firmware issue. However, it just didn't work out. So many read error as your case.

try testing media that was burned with the new firmware vs media burned from the previous firmware and see if there is any difference

what rip speed is everyone getting from their 2500As with this last firmware? mine sits at about 3x-3.5x during the whole rip...tried a few movies...all purchased in the last month....
doesn't the drive have a speed that should hit 16x, maybe not a constant 16x but I would think it should be more than 3.5x?
read that this drive had the 5x max read speed lock to prevent read errors, but I thought this last firmware removed that lock....

on mine when i first flashed it i got lots of errors at around 85% completion when running tests with nero cd dvd speed 3, when i tested the media on lite0n 851 wiht kprobe and dvdinfo pro no errors on same disk, then tested on nu ddw 082 with dvdinfo pro and no errors, so i was feeling it was maybe something with the nec 2500 and new flash.....this was on a disk that was written with an earlier flash non dl firmware.
then i burned a disk with new dl flash and tested on nec 2500 and got no errors so maybe it had something to do with when media was written on nec?
just my findings

next test!
burned (tevion-aldi 4x dvd+r) with 4x and herries firmware (tested with dvdinfopro):
burned with 6x:
the same disk (6x) tested again:
not so much errors
meanwhile i think dvdinfopro isnt a good tool to test quality of burned dvds.

I am using 1.07v2beta4 and having good results (mirror platinum dvd+r will still only write at 4x) would there be any point in upgrading to the latest firmware (d/l). Mirror dvd -r will go to 8x. i have tried the new firmware, and it puts the mirror +r to 8x, but I rarely use them and I certainly aint got any d/l discs, so is there anything new other than dual layer support. I have gone back to 1.07v2beta 4.

Probably only software-creators & firmware-patchers like nicW & Herrie.
