Hi

Have a external Mac Super drive that I want to flash:

HL-DT-ST
Firmware - RP09
RPC-02
DVDRW GX30N

But doesn't seem to be available so looking for suggestions on what current external DVD drives that suit a mac can be flashed before buying something new.

...then why dont you do it?

The questions is, WHY do you want to flash it anyway?

The reason I need to flash the drive is because I travel for work so have DVDs from Australia, UK, US etc.

Didn't realise that the reason why was so important as thought the technical details were more important.

The drive uses a Panasonic chipset I believe (viewtopic.php?f=30&t=47350), so given that there have been no firmware releases for this drive in more than a year now, I would not put much hope into a region free solution any time soon, unless a firmware is released sometime soon (which based on past history I doubt). Try using AnyDVD or similar if you want to watch multi-region discs.

Did you even use search in our forum?

You should look at some Optiarc (Nec/Sony) and LG drives I think.
For Optiarc drives you can find patches & flasher at Liggy & Dee's site.

There is still the manual dumping for this drive if needed but if there is a released firmware then there is no need.

Unfortunately there are no firmware releases at all for this drive...

Assuming that the raw dump option will work for this drive, would it be possible to build a header for it given that there aren't any GX3xN firmwares available for comparison purposes?

headoffice, if you're still watching this thread, it should be possible to create a raw firmware dump using DevilsClaw's Renesas Flasher (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46137) by running it with this special command line:

flasher -d <drive id> -l firmware.bin 1 80000000 00200000

where <drive id> should be replaced by your actual Drive ID number.

Once a firmware dump is available, that would open the door for a RPC patch for your drive.

I just tried what you suggested, cvs, but I didn't get a firmware.bin file.

Error Result:

cmd_drive: Opening Drive: 1.
cmd_dumploc: Starting dumping process
firm_dumper: Failed to read from drive. Will write what we got so far
cmd_dumploc: Failed to dump location
