Howdy,
I did it: I flashed my Fujitsu-Siemens CELSIUS-H UJDA-710.
It had the FW 1.51 and now it's FW 1.04 RPC1.
Ok, I got biiig problems reading CD and CDRs and CDRWs.
I still hoped that DRVLOADC would give me an option to save
my original FW before flashing, but nope.
Everything went smooth and good. Buuuut:
Can someone please give me a link or eMail me FW 1.51.
Pleeease. Maybe >NIL: got one.
I do hope this forum isn't just a one-way communication; Till
now I think I never received any reaction to my concerns...
Merry christmas !!! :-)

Ok, I took the patched firmwarefile 1.51 and flashed it with the DRVLOADC.EXE for Fujitsu - worked fine.
But now:
- I have to remove the drive from it's bay prior to booting, otherwise BIOS crashes.
- Drive is only recognized as Secondary Master (right bay)
- CD-writing always fails.

But it's RPC-1. Maybe there will be a better patch that I might be able to boot from my drive again; or use it for CDRWs or CDRs again one day.

(I hope my postings won't sound too pessimistic :D )

Maybe somebody can give me a 'clean' normal 1.51 FW...

MOST OF THE INFORMATION YOU WILL READ IN THIS THREAD IS NO LONGER RELEVANT AS THE UJDA AUTOPATCHER IS OUT.

The firmwares that were referenced previously were removed because you should use the UJDA Autopatcher to patch your drive to RPC-1

For more information, have a look here

The UJDA autopatcher is in beta testing and will probably be available to you all before the end of the year.

Wow, that's a really good news.
Thank you for making the patch for all of us.

Happy new year.

Today I flashed with FW 1.06 and now it seems to work fine; The drive is RPC-1, I can write CDRW, I can read CDs, CDRWs and CDRs.
...I'm glad that I didn't nuke my drive. So even with my last problems reported I started my DOS, insterted my drive right before flashing it again; worked fine; So I guess I can re-flash my drive until it goes up in flames :-)
But I would still appreciate someone to send me an original FW 1.51.
Gracias.

>NIL, what can I say but EXCELLENT!!

I have been watching this thread incessantly for the past few months, cheering you, Wolfy and G1zm0 silently in the background.

Once the autopatch is up, my very next move will be to the Firmware-flash donate facility so that the site and the excellent work done here can continue for the benefit of all.

Cheers.

I've been following this discussion for a long time and it's great to hear that the end is near and an auto patcher will be available for all those IDE users out there.

Unfortunately my UJDA 710 is a firewire drive in a Sony Docking Station (PCG-R505DL). Can anyone tell me is there a way to patch the firmware on this drive? - it is not picked up in DOS for example when I use the Win98 boot disk.......I'm assuming there is some way I can get a Firewire driver for DOS but before I go down the road into DOS config files - has anyone done this before?

Any and all help is appreciated, it would be good to know there is still hope for me :)

Is there any update on the Region Patch.

The adminastrator's posts seem to suggest that it would be available by now ???

Following G1zm0's discovery about the 2 versions of the DRVLOADC.exe flashing program, I've rebuilt ALL the UJDA downloads to create bootable floppies with the proper version of the flash tool.

Therefore, some all the old links might no longer work.

Anyway, here's the list I currently have on the server. I'll try to post master/slave info for these firmwares too, but I have to pick that back from various posts.

[I would advise anybody who has no immediate need to flash their drives TO WAIT, as I'm working on a better solution]

UJDA 710

o U710x104_SN.exe
rev. 1.04 for SN (Sony) OEM's (SECONDARY MASTER)

o U710x104_TT.exe
rev. 1.04 for TT (Toshiba) OEM's (SECONDARY MASTER)
Reported to work for:
- Fujitsu Laptops

o U710x106_CP.exe
rev. 1.06 for CP (Compaq) OEM's (SECONDARY MASTER)

o U710x151_MT.exe
rev. 1.51 for MT (????) OEM's (PRIMARY SLAVE)

UJDA 720

o http://www.firmware-flash.com/matshita/U720x103_BM.exe]U720x103_BM.exe
rev. 1.03 for BM (IBM) OEM's (SECONDARY MASTER)
Reported to work for:
- IBM ThinkPads
- Toshiba Laptops
- HP Laptops
- Sony Laptops

Hi >NIL:

I have had a quick look at the DRVLOADC.EXE program, which is part of the '100_710.ZIP' firmware loader. I have found the following messages in the program amongst others:-

ATAPI DVD-ROM & CD-R/RW Program Loader. Version %s
(C)Copyright 1995-2001 KYUSHU MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC CO.,LTD.

DRVLOADC [/J|/P|/M|/S] [file name]
Option:
/J or /Q or /PM : Primary Master
/P or /PS : Primary Slave
/M or /SM : Secondary Master
/S or /SS : Secondary Slave

IS THERE ANY KME DVD-ROM & CD-R/RW DRIVE?
UJDA520 KXL-DV10 DVDROM10
UJDA110 UJDA120 UJDA130 UJDA140 UJDA150 UJDA170 UJDA510 UJDA520 KXL-DV10DVDROM10UJDA540 UJDA710 CDRCB01 UJDA720
JDACD-R/RW RW8040A

MATSHITAProgram Loader 52.002.01
Read Aging Reports failure. (*interesting*)
Internal reports update failure. (*interesting*)

Also within the DRVLOADC.EXE file is a HEX firmware file which appears to be called 'Program Loader2' after decoding it.

Just a guess, but it appears that this internal firmware is loaded to the DVD drive first, before the user specified FIRMWARE.FIL hex file is downloaded onto the drive. Could it be that this internal pre-loader built into DRVLOADC.EXE sent to the drive first, adapts itself to the user specified switches, setting Master/Slave/Primary/Secondary for the Notebook for which DRVLOADC.EXE was written (ACER/IBM in this case). Is it therefore possible that the bits required to set/reset the MSPS settings of the drive, need to be apropriately modified in this internal HEX PRE-LOADER file for other notebooks?

I have an IBM A31p with Panasonic/KME UJDA720 drive, firmware 1.03. It is set to Secondary Master using UDMA Level 2.

>NIL: I too am one of the people that have trawled the internet over a year almost daily for the RPC1 fix for these UJDA720 drives. At last after I discovered your patched firmware, I tried to download it. I too received the message that the download was no longer a valid link. ;-(

WE ARE NOT WORTHY... But grovel grovel, please could someone send me a copy of the RPC1 firmware U720x103_IBM.zip

I have heard great things of this patch on IBM A series systems. I am willing and able to try the patch on my system, and will report on the results.

Does anyone know the micro-controller used on the UJDA720? I would like to try and track-down a disassembler for the firmware microcode, to see what is going on.

I suggest that the fat cats who plague us with Region Coding should have their bank accounts Region Coded, and access should be denied if they wonder too far from their 'home Region'! See how they like it!

What the #### is the point of a portable system, if it falls over and dies if used in a different country. Makes no sense to me. Restrictive practices, don't ya just luv em! ;-(

I have worked in many countries and been denied the possibility to use local DVDs. So guess what, I didn't buy 'em! Who lost out financially, not me that's for sure! Fat Cats, please take note! If I could have run the DVDs I would have bought them!

I ramble too much... Thankx >NIL:, any hints on how you performed the alchemy on the UJDA720 firmware appreciated.

<#O#>

PS. Domestic DVD player 'SM Supervision 2550' about GBP70, pretty good, can be Region Free'd and MACROVISION FREE'd through remote. Not portable though!

I need to boot from my UJDA710 which is currently on slave. I tried all the working links of 1.50 which turn my drive to master but i loose all my cd cdw capability  I dont mind downgrading but all the links dont work. Could someone email me working links please :D .

The drive is on a Dell CPX 450GT but I could move it to my friends sony vaio or IBM thinkpad.

Would really appreciate it

Hi
I have done a lot of reading on this firmware site and I must admit I am as confused as ever. I have a Toshiba laptop 5105-s607 and the drive is a Matshita ujda 720 DVD/CDRW1. I would like to try flash the drive and I found one download which has to be run from a boot disk. I am running windows XP and I cannot even find how to get my system to start with the floppy drive. Could you recommend a patch I can use on this drive and how to get it running.

Re Toshiba 5105 series & booting:

Plug in the floppy drive.

Select 'Start' --> 'Settings' --> 'Control Panel' --> 'Toshiba HWsetup'.

Select the tab 'Boot Priority'

In the drop down list choose an option that boots from the floppy first. I use 'FDD->CD-ROM(->LAN)->HDD'

As for the rest of what you have to do, see here.

People!

The links to patched versions of the firmware were removed BECAUSE the UJDA Autopatcher is what you should use to patch your drive period.

I will not provide any of these firmwares. You have to use the autopatcher.

Now, for people who used these firmwares and experience some loss of functionality (which is precisely why do not want people to use these firmwares as an RPC-1 patch), Arzeno has begun collecting firmware dumps that were produced by the Autopatcher, and eventually, you should be able to find a dump of the firmware you had originally. This only applies to people who already flashed their drive with another RPC-1 firmware

Now, if you manage to get hold of one of those previous firmwares and decide to flash it, eventhough it's a different OEM and revision than the one you previously had, you are on your own. I will only try to help people who use these firmwares BEFORE the autopatcher was out.
The Autopatcher was made BECAUSE using these firmwares could cause havoc, so please do use the Autopacher, thank you.

The Autopatcher is available from here

Now:
andrewra: laptop doesn't boot from floppy? BIOS issue. Read your manual or call Toshiba. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PATCH. Find how to boot from floppy and then come back.

jamesky: told ya! If you did it before the autopatcher was out (more than 2 months ago), sorry about that. If you did it after, well, this is precisely why I removed these links, so that people do not attempt to flash a firmware that will impair their drive.

intelcrapreg: Good work ;) But I already knew that (I did an analysis of drvloadc too! There is actually a loader in every firmware, so I'm not sure that the one from drvloadc is being used (could need different programming for 710, 720, 730 etc...)
I also tried to get the read aging reports and stuff. I followed the code and tried the relevant options but it didn't work (must need some extra stuff, or the reports are being sent to a section of memory that you need to dump from the drive afterwards)
If you want to get your hands dirdy into the disassembly, you can use the autopatcher to unscramble the firmwares (dumped firmwares are NOT scrambled. Firmwares that you use with DRVLOADC are!. Use the -h option of mpatch to figure out what to do), then you will need to to a disassembly against an MN102000 (Mitsubishi 102K) processor.
