This might help someone else...
On my HP Pavilion ze5700 laptop, Windows XP Device Manager usually reported
the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive as this mangled name:
S M U G C R / V N-324
But sometimes it reported the name (correctly) as:
SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324F
This was puzzling, but after updating the drive firmware from version
U201 to U206, the mangled version of the name no longer appears.
I found the firmware update on Dell's web site, here:
http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R93817&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=122461which linked to:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/R93817.EXEor:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/R93817.EXEIf that should go away, you can also find it at The WayBack Machine:
http://web.archive.org/web/20060103122744/http://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/R93817.EXENote: IMO, it is rediculous that we have to go to Dell's web site to find a
download for an HP computer. HP's web site is just about useless. It not
only lacks this DVD/CD drive firmware update, it has almost no useful downloads
at all for this computer. Shame on HP!
