This might help someone else...

On my HP Pavilion ze5700 laptop, Windows XP Device Manager usually reported
the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive as this mangled name:
S M U G C R / V N-324
But sometimes it reported the name (correctly) as:
SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324F

This was puzzling, but after updating the drive firmware from version
U201 to U206, the mangled version of the name no longer appears.

I found the firmware update on Dell's web site, here:

which linked to:

Note: IMO, it is rediculous that we have to go to Dell's web site to find a
download for an HP computer. HP's web site is just about useless. It not
only lacks this DVD/CD drive firmware update, it has almost no useful downloads
at all for this computer. Shame on HP!

Hmmm... I found the SN-324F firmware section of the rpc1.org database:

The U206 version is not listed. So perhaps someone can add this one?
(If there is a way for me to do so myself, I couldn't find it.)
