I loaded that NU firmware onto my drive and now I can't flash back to that UD22. Any body got any ideas? Any body got a UX0x series firmware? I don't care about region free dvd I just want it to go back a QSI drive, just like OEM.

I got the same problem like you. When I try to write or read flash it always display "Unknow flash type" and I open my drive. I found 3 chips on my drive
1. MT1369 (DVD Controller)
2. MT1516 (CD/RW Controller)
3. 29LV004 (Flash Memory) (no prefix code and the logo's is a Fujisu Chip)
Maybe It's a problem because MTKFLASH can't identify flash type from there code (not sure) and I think almost drive use ST chip, code M29W004.
Now I using a firmware NU U301 (can't write CD at 24X some file can't read after writen)

here are my laptop specs:
gericom masterpiece radeon
P4 2.5
256mb sdr
QSI sbw 242
XP home
first, i upgrade to NU 242U firmware u301
http://www.nuniverse.com/admin/download/file/SBW-242-U301.exe
then applied the beta SBW242R1
http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?p=77242#77242
The drive reports in DiscInfo 1.5:
reading : 4x
writing : 24x
RPC1
i ran a speed test with nero cd-dvd speed (nero version 6 retail)
and the results are :
data CD:
reading:
start : 9x
average : 19x
end : 25x
DVD:
reading
start : 1.7x
average : 3x
end : 4x
works fine with region select with dvdgenie 4.10
haven't tried yet any cd burning but nero tells the drive is 24x burner...
everything else works fine. even if the reading test results are poor with a dvd, it was the same thing before applying any firmware to the drive... dvd reading just sucks with this combo drive !

gotoh, it would be helpful if you would post what firmware your drive originally shipped with, and maybe what IDE location it was and is on.

Hi!
I have the 242 drive on an Acer Notebook with FW UX08.
The DVD+R performance of burned DVDs is just horrible.
Does anyone have a newer version of the FW to upgrade?
I know there is one, think its 13. I saw it on a notebook but didnt have time to extract it because it wasnt mine .
thanks
Stephan

My firmware is UX10
Have no problems reading/writing cdr/cdrws but I would really like to unlock it so I can watch dvds from different regions. The lock is killing me.
If you need my version of the firmware, I can try to extract it and send it to you. Just PM me. And keep up the good work...
cjb110 wrote: Whats the latest firmware for this drive? I have UX08 on mine.
I am having major problems with it reading cdr's, mainly its not reading bin/cue's burnt with fireburner using my main PC's LiteOn drive, the disks are read by the liteon and my pioneer dvd drive fine.
I've tried different speeds and different media but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Also if there is new firmware, how can I update it? as the laptop has no floppy drive, and I don't have an external one, not sure if it will boot from a usb disk.

To the Dangerous Brothers:
I downloaded your patched U301 Windows installer to use on my Dell version QSI SBW-242U drive which had an RPC2 version of firmware UD22 on it.
After using it to flash my drive, it now comes up in Nero (full version) etc as the NU CDRW/DVD SBW242U and is region free with the U301 firmware.
I have played a couple of DVDs and burnt a CDRW no problems with it.
Verdict - complete success!
THANKYOU!!!

Hi!
I just found the UD30 FW in the download section!?
Does anyone know if this FW can be used in any other QSI 242 except the Dell Notebooks?

I have released a beta version of my autopatcher for QSI SBW242.
It read the current firmware with MTKFLASH, patch it and flash it with the official QSI DOS flasher.
Dont try to write other binary firmwares than your own backup with MTKFLASH because this destroy the calibration settings of your drive !!!
Etna
Needs real Dos, write access and more than 1 MB Space. (This http://etna.rpc1.org/bootdisk.html works if you have a floppy drive)

I used etna's autopatcher with a SBW-242 in a Dell Inspiron 8500. It came with the firmware UD22, but I used the Dell Windows Flasher to update to UD30 first. I used mtkflash 1.80.1 in DOS to make the backup, then booted back into Windows to use the autopatcher on this backup, then flashed it back onto the drive with mtkflash 1.80.1
When I tried to use your autopatcher in real DOS, I was told that it would only run in Win32. Have you changed this etna?
If you do use mtkflash 1.80.1, be sure not to include the "/b" flag since this version of mtkflash defaults to binary mode, and if you include the "/b" flag, it will see the "/m" flag which you need to use as the filename that you want and you will get an incomplete backup to a file called "M".
Using the Official QSI flasher should work fine too.

Yes. I have compiled it now as 16bit Version so it run in Dos.
I have also added a BootCD version for users that dont have a floppy drive but use it with care because the backup is stored only on a ramdrive.

Does anyone know if there are any problems or solutions to patching the SBW242U in a Sony Vaio, FW US03, i've found nothing on any forums about the US firmware, and it's not my machine, so I don't want to kill it.
Unfortunatly, it seems that I have become the resident DVD expert at work after flashing my own computers and then a couple for other people, but this QSI drive has got me stumped. any info about US patches in the pipeline or workarounds that are highly unlikely to cause the CDRW problems I've read from above, heck any info at all would be appreciated.

Why not use the autopatcher? It dumps your firmware, then patches it, then flashes it back.

Okay so I tried using MTKFlash to update the firmware on my SBW-242 and it erased the firmware then said there was an "input file format mismatch" so now the drive doesn't show up at all in Windows. When I try flashing with the original UD22 roms, I get that same message and when I try flashing with the UD30.bin I get "ERR: fail to identify the flash type!"...........if anyone here knows of a solution, please please help me out. Thank you very much.

There are some problems with the MTKFLASH versions.
With version 1.80 you have to use /B to use a binary file for flashing but 1.80.1 doesnt like this switch.
1.80 should use this
MTKFLASH x W /B UD30.bin
1.80.1 this
MTKFLASH x W UD30.bin
I think older versions doesnt detect your flash correctly.

Version 1.80.1 worked! Now the drive is recognized by Windows. The only problem now (which was also the original problem that prompted me to try updating the firmware) is that the drive won't recognize CD-ROM or CD-R discs...it will load DVD-ROM, DVD-R and DVD+R just fine but no CDs. I'm using UD30.bin........any ideas?

I have bought a Packardbell laptop with the QSI SBW-242 drive
the firmware was UX09, I have flashed it into UD30, but now when I burn some CDs , I can only read them into the LAptop.
I just ask if somebody has a stock firmware for me.
Thank you very much.
