Good point PumaUK. What was I thinking of?

But the frustration remains that the disks are all being seen as full Audio Cds even thought they're actually blank, but all appear to have a mysterious 'Track 1' of 44 bytes. The file system is reported as CDFS.

firmware version UQ81
Driver Region status LOCK DETECTED
Region setting status None Set
User Change left 5
Manufacturer resets left 4
Current region set: NOT SET
Read Speed x4 Write speed X4

I don't know where to go from here

CDFS is Compact Disc File System, have you any software that is setting the CDR as this for reasons usually to do with windows 2000, try starting with a clean boot with all drivers/programs/startup items disabled, enter a cd and see what it says

I have Succeeded following info and down files from this thread. My config: Dell D500, QSI SBW-242 UD30, HDD 60GB - c:13GB,d:40GB ntfs, e:2GB fat32.

1)First I tried to boot from cd with caldera dos - no succes - seen only c: and d:ntfs, therefore possible only to use command "mtkflash c" - find out that combo is secondary master, i.e. No. 3. Command "MTKFLASH 3 R /B /M old" was not working, mtkflash could not write the backup of FW.
2)Than boot from old original Win98 cd to DOS, seen only c:2GB fat32. This was sufficient to run "MTKFLASH 3 R /B /M old", created my own backup file "old" (yes without extension - a bit st.pid).
3)Than run "autoqsi2.bat" - succed - Nero Infotool said No Protection
4)Than again boot from Win98, used command "MTKFLASH 3 W /O 04000 1FFF /B /M U301.BIN" - write new FW downloaded from this site - succeeded - I am able to read DVD-RAM (actualy the very first I inserted NO, but all the other YES - Verbatim 3x, 5x - formated UDF20).
BUT Nero Infotool showed again RPC2 protection. So I again use autoqsi2.bat - succeeded - DVD-RAM still able, but RPC1 11!!! - so the drive is region free now. I tried to read also DVD-RW - no-problem (but to recognize the disc took over 2 min.). The name of the drive has changed from QSI SBW-242 UD30 to NU SBW-242 U301.
P.S.: I don't know what was originally max reading speed for CD, but after step 2 it was 31x!? (Neroinfotool), after step 4 remained 24x... All the other speeds and abilities to read remained unchanged+DVD-RAM gained.
Used MTKFLASH 1.83c

Thanks a lot for your info. I'll see if I can use it to gain some joy with my QSI.

One more info after a few days of using my QSI after firmware flash. I do not know why, but it seems, that the DVD-RAM sometimes is imposible to read, even if I pressed it quite strongly in order to make sure that it fitted correctly. I have to take it out and enter again and then it can be read again. Maybe my drive is quite old (3 years) and therefore getting more sensitive to improper insertion of the disc or is just generaly worn-out.

I have a QSI combo CDRW/DVD SBW242U UX30 drive. Does anyone have a working flash backup or a firmware upgrade for this drive?

Hi.

I have SBW-242B in Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V2000. The only working firmware I found can be downloaded here:
