Hello! I need a firmware update to my HP CDDVDW TS-H653R (OEM HP, BUT REALLY SAMSUNG I GUESS), making it capable of write in RAW DAO mode. Other capabilities need to remain unaltered. I need only more one record mode: RAW DAO.

My intention is to be able to record Dreamcast ISOs. My Old SAMSUNG drive was able to record DC ISOs without any problem and the only notable difference between my old SAMSUNG and my new CDDVDW TS-H653R is the old SAMSUNG can record one more mode: RAW DAO. In short, both drives have exactly the same write modes *EXCEPT* RAW DAO, and i need it on my HP CDDVDW TS-H653R. This is possible? If so, below is the detailed information.

On the Net there ar no firmware for this drive (HP CDDVDW TS-H653R)

Where does that "Dreamcast ISOs" come from?

My english is bad... So, sorry any mistakes, ok?

Dreamcast is the last videogame console produced by Sega. Sega does not produce videogame consoles anymore. There are no new games sold out there for Dreamcast, only used ones. So, a Dreamcast ISO is an image of a Sega Dreamcast game CD, in most, there are CDI images (Padus Discjuggler). There are many places on the web to download DC games.

My old samsung drive, can write readable CDRs for Dreamcast, but my new HP drive does not.

Yes, this is true, there are some RAW modes, but there are NO "RAW DAO" without 96 or 16, and my OLD samsung does, in short, my old samsung have RAW DAO, RAW DAO 16 and RAW DAO 96 and my new HP have only RAW DAO 16 and RAW DAO 96. The lack of this mode (RAW DAO) may be the problem, because this is the only difference between both drives.

My question was regarding the copyright status of those ISOs. I know there is many Abandonware out there available for download, but it doesnt always mean you are allowed to use them as you like. ;)

There are three RAW DAO modes known to me... I think that there is no known way to implement such a mode into that models firmware, AFAIK. HP would have to implement such a feature into their OEM firmware, if that would be ever possible...

My hint: Use that drive you know that worked, or a same replacement. Slimtype drives are limited IN ANY WAY!!!

 Hheheeh Well, I guess this is simple math: no new product (media) + no support = allowed downloads... The Dreamcast drive is a Yamaha GigaDrive (unique!). Original Dreamcast CDs has 1.2GB (max). The games are ripped using the Dreamcast itself with a datacable. These ripped games fit on a regular CD-R. The web has some good places to download CDI (DiscJuggler) images for DC. Well, this is only curiosity... ;)

I do not speak german. Can you explain, in short these three methods?

On the Internet i found some other drives (not HP) where firmware updates added new writing modes, so, i guess this is possible. By the way, on another topic of this site i found that some HP OEM are Samsung, and maybe, i could use one compatible firmware. This is true?

This was my fear. :( Well, what are you mean with Slimtype? and... If I buy any other NEW Samsung, it will REALLY work for me?

It would be handy if it really were that easy... but the release of new products and providing support is not bound to copyright of other products! Anyway.

I don't think it has ultimately only to do with writing methods (TAO, SAO, DAO) but more with subchannel data...

A slimtype drive or Super Slimtype drive is a small factor optical drive which fits into a Notebook, Laptop, etc.
Which model was your former Samsung drive?? Specific model name please.

To tell you the truth, you cannot and should really not rely on the info Nero Infotool, Discinfo, DVDInfopro and other tools telling you. They just read out the capabilities the engineers should have implemented. So these info is not always the full truth.

Maybe the drive description and properties info on the manufacturers site gives a better clue what's possible and what's not.

Sorry about the slimtype info, I thought you had a Lappy and this drive were a laptop optical drive, but it isnt...

I would try to get another Sammy 182...
I just had a search, its still available new for around €30, and surely its also available via ebay.

I found the description of my recorder on Samsung site but there are no info about record modes. I guess this is not a useful information for "normal" end users.... And we are not "normal" end users :) The manual is here: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conte ... 2D_Eng.pdf

Hummm... I will considerate this :( But i need to say this is not my intention. I do not like to buy some kind of things on the internet. Anyway, thank you for the help!
