I bought a computer with this drive, but I can't find any firmware for it.
The computer is HP, but searching on google for drive's model, I could only find info about LITEON drives. However, LITEON's page doesn't seem to know it, so I can't really tell what's it's brand.

This is a laptop drive so you must ask HP for updates.

It's not so clear, I think.
Some companies put slimtype drives / Laptop technology into desktop computers...

Anyway, HP must release a firmware update. There is no other way.

Chancer, why do you require a new firmware?

@chef: It's a normal 5 1/2" drive. Is there any way to extract the current firmware?

@Puma: To unlock the dvd region protection. If it's really a Liteon, I guess I can patch it with OmniPatcher.

I know VLC can play DVDs no matter what region they are, but we're using this computer as a media center, and we want to use Windows Media Center as well. However, it'll only play one region discs, and we have many discs of other regions.

no omnipatcher patches firmwares. To remove the region lock for the DVD function, use LtnRPC

But I need to make sure it's a Liteon, right? Or does it work for other brands?

There's no danger to damage or brick it?

"RCP Disabled" or something, but it wasn't really disabled. It had no effect.

if it said that, then the region of the drive is now region free for DVD. What info does discinfo give you?

The DH8E2L sounds to me like an OEM version of the LiteON iHES208 ...

Try using C0deKing's Flash Utility and/or EEPROM Utility to see if they recognise the drive. If they do, then you might be able to backup your EEPROM and firmware and you might even be able to crossflash the drive to a real LiteON iHES208. If I were you I would first double check with C0deKing if crossflashing from DH8E2L to iHES208 is supported or not before attempting it ...

@Puma: DiscInfo still says it's locked. I don't really remember if I used admin rights. I'll check it later.

@cvs: I was thinking of something like that, since HP does not make drives, but how did you get to iHES208? Just comparing features?
If you mean this Flash Utility, yes I can read and save the firmware (.BIN file? - does this confirm it's LiteON?), but OmniPatcher could not recognize it. I'll try later the EEPROM Utility.

And vice-versa?

A LiteON iHES208 can not be taken to RPC1 with LtnRPC. LtnRPC can reset the change counter, IIRC.

Edit: I had a look at the 8HD9 firmware. It has alot in common with the iHES 206/208 firmwares, so it is most probably a clone. The MCSE riplock patch can be applied without modifications after adding the new drive id.

Well the naming structure of OEM and retail Blu-Ray LiteON drives suggests an iHES208, since:
DH-6E2S = iHES106
DH-6E2L = iHES206 (iHES106 + LightScribe)
then one would expect that:
DH-8E2S = iHES108
DH-8E2L = IHES208 (iHES108 + LightScribe)

Yes, those are the utilities I was mentioning, and yes if they work then you've got a LiteON drive, as ala42 already confirmed after looking at the firmware :)

Can you please upload a copy of your dumped firmware (the *.bin file, should have 2MB) for us?

Omnipatcher is obsolete now and it does not work with any of the new drives released in the past couple of years. You need to use ala42's MCSE once he releases an updated version which supports your drive.

Yes, if the Flash Utility supports your drive then crossflashing back and forth should be possible ... but as usual make sure you create an EEPROM backup and a Firmware backup and keep them safe, so you can crossflash/revert back if needed ...

Here, FW + EEPROM: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QVMVBUA3
I loaded it on MCSE, but both Read Speed and RPC1 options were disabled.

As posted above, I had to add the new drive id to MCSE. Will be available in the next release.
