New Dell laptop has this drive as default; but comes with Riplock and RPC protection so trying to find a firmware to rip it all out. Not had any luck finding any firmware on the forum.. (or any mention of the drive itself either..)

I've not had much luck tracking down a copy of the firmware (Dell's site, according to the service tag is for a differnet model of DVD drive (TSST T633C)
Hope someone can help; here is the Discinfo.. info:

There is a utilities section here at rpc http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46137 This utility is for your brand of drive. You could try dumping your current firmware and maybe someone would be able to patch it for you. At the very least you could contribute to the supported and/or unsupported list of drives for this utility since you model number is on neither. If you can get the firmware dumped I can try to patch it but I am not an expert I would try to use media code speed edit although I doubt this drive is currently supported it seems to be a newer model.

The GA3xN/L series of LG drives uses a Panasonic chipset, so I'm afraid the Renesas Flasher won't work.

Since currently there is no way to dump the firmware from LG drives with a Panasonic chipset, and there's no firmware available for this drive either (nor for any other drive from the GA3x family as a matter of fact), then I'm afraid there's no way to patch this drive at the moment. It is a matter of waiting until a GA3xN series firmware becomes available.

cvs has posted about this. Its not supported. You will need to wait for a firmware release.

Yes. The situation has indeed changed since then, thanks to DevilsClaw's investigations into one of these Panasonic chipset drives. It should be possible now to create a raw firmware dump for drives based on a Panasonic chipset by using DevilsClaw's Renesas Flasher and running it with this special command line:

flasher -d <drive id> -l firmware.bin 1 80000000 00200000

where <drive id> should be replaced by your actual Drive ID number.

That raw firmware cannot be flashed back in its raw form - it needs to be manually processed first to make it flashable, but at least it is possible to create a firmware dump now which is still a major step forward in itself ...

Unfortunately there are still no firmware releases available for this drive. Generating a raw dump seems to be the only way to obtain a copy of this firmware...

Sorry for bumping but I have obtained a copy of this firmware.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/102011983/Firmw ... rmware.bin

I remember a thread where devilclaw made a fixed version of the raw dump of a similar drive to this one(GS30N i believe) but since this firmware has no MCSE support yet...

Actually, I just tested. It's patchable? Here's a screenshot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/102011983/Firmw ... 20MSCE.png

Exciting!
