(I read through the sticky FAQ and conducted a search for this specific drove prior to creating this thread.)

The November 2009 iMac 27" i7 Quadcore's come with this particular Optiarc DVDR unit.

DVD Info X provides the following details:
Vendor: OPTIARC
Model: DVD RW AD-5680H
Firmware: 3AHB
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is SET
4 vendor resets left
4 region changes left
Region 2

The OS X System Profiler adds these details:
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Thank you.

Firmware version 3AHB indicates that the drive could be using NEC hardware and commands for flashing/dumping firmware. You could try to generate and identification file for this drive with Binflash.

OK i read the rules of forum so i gotta repost. using dvd info x i go this

Vendor: OPTIARC
Model: DVD RW AD-5680H
Firmware: 3AHB
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is SET
4 vendor resets left
4 region changes left
Region 1

System profiler gives me this

OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H:

Firmware Revision: 3AHB
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

I am looking for firmware for this device that will do two things. 1. Region unlock 2. remove Riplock.
The removal of riplock is the most important. Im not sure if this is the proper way to request this. not really in the mood to have admin snapping at me. If you need more info please request it but i think i summitted what i needed.

I booted the iMac to windows XP and ran the Binflash tool. The scan produces this:
Binflash - NEC GUI version - (C) by Liggy, Herrie and r-man
http://binflash.cdfreaks.com

GUI version v1.50
Drive interface v1.34
NEC interface v1.50
NEC internal v1.50

Using Ricoh bitsetting commands

If I click dump it tells me it's not supported. Does this help towards getting an rpc-1 firmware file?

Managed to create identify.txt (it took ages to run!).

I've attached it.

Thanks, already got the information about the 5680H a few days ago. Need to think and implement some small changes as there's now a letter at a position where they only had digits before. Once that's in place I should be able to retrieve the required information for dumping and flashing incl. modified firmwares.

Will work on everything during my holiday that starts in a week.

Hi Liggy,
Thanks for the updated firmware (viewtopic.php?f=10&p=229264)
I used the binflash dump facility to get a copy of the ad-5680h firmware version 3ahf. It's attached.

Hope this is useful to you, perhaps you can release an rpc-1 version? I just tried flashing the 3ahb-rpc1 version but haven't tested it yet.

Thanks!
J

Wow, thanks for the fast update! Just burned a DVD and it's all working fine. Haven't tested a Video-DVD yet but I'm sure it will work.

Cheers,
J

Hi guys

I am having problems with a region locked iMac. These posts look likely to be the solution to my problem. The trouble is I have no experience using firmware flash tools although I am more than technically able! Please would it be possible for someone to write a step by step dummy's guide?

My drive info is as follows:

Vendor: Optiarc
Model: DVD RW AD-5680H
Firmware: 3AHB
Status: Currently locked on region 1 (I would like it to be region free if possible)

Cheers

T

about 4 posts up liggy has posted the link to the patched firmware. Then follow link to binflash page

http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

Mac OSX s listed under download. Read the Example on using Binflash.

Hi Puma - That was the link that I used. I then downloaded the Mac file necflash_mac-1.tar
When I execute this file it opens a window showing the following code:

necflash 3 {-clearbt} {device}
necflash 3 {-queryrpc} {device}
necflash 3 {-resetrpc} {device} {Vendor|Global}
necflash 3 {-version}

-scan - Scan for supported devices
-dump - Dump firmware and write to file
-flash - Flash firmware and write to file
-identify - Identify unknown drives
-querybt - Query booktype information
-setbt - Change booktype settings
-setbtrw - Change booktype on current DVD+RW disc
-clearbt - Clear booktype settings and counter
-queryrpc - Query region status
-resetrpc - Reset region counter on RPC2 drives
-version - Display version information

-v - Verbose mode
-s - Skip disclaimer

logout

[Process completed]

At this point I am unable to type anything in the window. Am I doing something wrong? What should I be doing?

I appreciate your patience...

yeah did you extract the file from the tar download? input the command line via terminal as chef posted. make sure you use the correct filename you downloaded.

Hi, I followed the link and tried to flash it in Windows XP using the GUI method. However, it gave me an error message stating that there is no valid firmware. The file that I downloaded from was named as 3ahb.7z http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/download/en/5680h/3ahb.7z. I tried to even rename the extension to 3ahb.bin. But it is still not working.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

The file you downloaded is a 7-Zip archive which contains several *.bin firmware files. Extract the files from the archive (using 7-Zip or WinZip/WinRar which normally support this type of archive as well) and then flash the desired *.bin file to your drive.
