As I mentioned in my post, I bought this Blu-ray writer in OEM packaging from the market and installed it in the Toshiba laptop. The laptop came with a TEAC DVD-Writer, Toshiba does support that.

will be LG for any firmware updates, there hasn't been any as yet, you could contact them direct with your issue

Thanks, I have probably what is an incompatible media error due to the media code not being in the existing firmware. if I were to get the existing firmware then I was planning to edit the media codes. I tried contacting LG but no avail, is there a contact mechanism that is known to work for firmware requests, either stock or updates?

Hi guys, i have the same problem here. I bought my GBW-T10N from eBay, and put it in a Slim SATA to USB2.0 box, and used for my Thinkpad T61. The strange thing is that the set came with the firmware version U234 and it can only read and write verbatim bd-r/re. I am not sure where this firmware comes from. I am searching everywhere on the web to look for firmware upgrade, and finally i found the following link:

http://121ware.com/psp/PA121/121ETC2/CR ... modId=5873

It is firmware released for NEC Japan for some of its laptops using GBW-T10N, with some online translation tools, not that hard to understand. It has a UM08 release too, but I don't think that's the one, UN08 seems more correct.

I downloaded the firmware update and tried to run it on laptop, but it did not allowed. The update button is grayed out. Please refer to the attachment. I think it might be caused by the SlimSata -USB2.0 bridging chip I used. The device is a removable device now, and the device name and ID might be different and the update program does NOT recognize it.

My T61 does not have native Sata port to install the drive directly, I am asking if any of you guys would like to try the firmware update if it works, while I am asking around my friends to borrow their laptop with native slime sata interface and a 12.7mm slot....

Same problem, doesn't let me update the drive, it is greyed out. Maybe the exe needs to be changed to recognize the drive firmware version that we have?

The flasher looks for a firmware revision starting with UN/UM, so it refuses to update other drives.
The UN08 and UM08 firmwares differ just in a few bytes. They do not support your OTCBDR media.

For my case, the U234 version is even worse, it only recognizes Verbatim BD-R/RE and nothing else works. So even the UN08 firmware does not support OTCBDR, I am willing to give it a try.

Is it possible to perform some sort of analysis on the assembly code of the updater, and reverse engineer it to skip the checking for current UN/UM rev version? Any SoftICE expert here?

If your drive does not recognize CD and DVD and also can not boot from a bootable disk, it has a hardware defect. No firmware update can fix that.

Sorry for my misleading statement. My GBW-T10N with firmware U234 works fine with all most all the CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW, but for blu-ray disc, it only reads and writes Verbatim BD-R/RE.

Found that this model is listed on LG's website,

http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/gbw-t10n.jhtml

by any chance we can approach LG and ask for the firmware?

The U237 firmware is dated Nov 27 2007, UN08 is dated Jun 24 2009 and has better BD media support.

I am in the same situation. I have purchased from eBay the GBW-T10N, sata slim drive. Made an adapter and it is currently connected in my PC. I have burned two TDK BluRay disks. I have bought new BluRay media but it does not work anymore. It gives errors without writting anything to it.

I have contacted LG to ask for the latest firmware but no reply from them so far... If I will get anything from them, I'll post it here.
Nobody has the latest firmware from them? I wish to avoid to try to upgrade it with a third party firmware or from another sites other than LG.

Thanks for the quick reply. :) but why would I want to return the drive? It could not be upgraded or fixed? Anything wrong with it?

Can you still read the burned TDK disks ? Which media code do the new BD disks have ? Try quality media.

Hello!
I've got the same bd-writer, with the exception that I've got the firmware U237 on it. As I tried to update the firmware from that Japanese page, the programme said: ,,Can't find target drive''. I tried that on a laptop (drive connected via SATA) with Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 (x64) on it and on a desktop (drive also connected via SATA) with Windows XP Home Edition SP3 (x86) on it. Same error....

In think the problem is, that that UN08 firmware can only be updated to a UN05 / UN06 / UN07 one. (the Japanese text says that, I think)
So, has anyone a firmware update form U237 to UN05 / UN06 / UN07 ?

I also wrote some emails to LG but they just blocked me off.

Thanks for any help
