Hello all,

I am looking for an RPC1 firmware for the drive in the new (June 8 2009) MacBook Pro 13". It is [*oops*]; the output of DVD Info X is as follows:

Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Model: DVDRW GS23N
Firmware: SB00
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is SET
4 vendor resets left
4 region changes left
Region 2

Am I SOL? I have searched everywhere on the Internet...

Thanks,

- awh

It should be supported by MCSE, which needs windows environment to be run.

Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Model: DVDRW GS23N
Firmware: SB03
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is NOT SET
4 vendor resets left
5 region changes left
No region set

I have dumped the core and main firmware (using Flasher on BootCamp) but I cannot attach these images since the ".bin" extension is prohibited from attachments.

I have a question about the auto-reset. The process, at every reboot, flashes the firmware so that I can get 5 changes. Is this going to affect the flash memory? I don't think it was designed to be flashed at every boot. Could I do instead as follows?

- Right now, I can switch region on a GS23N SB03, 5 times using Apple DVD Player
- When I am done, I could then flash an unpatched SB03 firmware and get another 5 changes to do
- Every few months, when I have used up my 5 times, I reflash it to get another 5

This way, I don't have to fiddle with MCSE and I wouldn't reflash the DVD at every boot. Also, I could do it all from Mac, using flasher.
Is this correct? I don't plan to see non-region-1 movies very often.

short answer no. The drive would lock then.

No, completely wrong. You flash the patch firmware once, that is all. No need to care about it later or to install any other software.
When the patched firmware is running, the following counter changes are not made permanent, the drive will forget them when rebooting. After every drive reboot the counter settings you had when flashing the patched firmware are active again.

Thank you for the clarification. I was puzzled by this old message by >NIL:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15294&p=71131&hilit=trust#p71131

Quote:
1/ If the autoreset firmware has properly been done, YES it is better to use autoreset. But there is no way to know whether autoreset has been properly done but to *trust* the patcher or have a look into it yourself.

2/ If the autoreset has not been properly done (i.e. the firmware endlessly writes the drive region into its flash memory over and over again), NO, because what you will end up with is a damaged flash memory, hence a damaged drive.

Is a patch with MCSE properly done? Where are the "non permanent changes" written to? In some area of volatile RAM that can be safely changed a million times? Thank you for your help.

No need to worry, works without problems since several years on many LG drive models.

Thank you, ala42.

In your page, http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/ I can find LG GS23N SB00, but I have SB03.

I can find a SB03-00 firmware here: http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=category&id=1823

Do you think I can use MCSE safely to patch it?

Thank you for your help!

Also, when I run MCSE on GS23N_SB03-00, MCSE tells me:

Firmware rev: GS20N MAIN REV LVL SB03 022409
Bootcode rev: GS20N CORE

I can read that MCSE can't know every drive in the universe, and the difference (GS20N instead of GS23N) is ok. Is it ok?
Thanks.

Why don't you just try it??

No need to worry. All you see is inside the firmware. The firmware supports several drive IDs.
