If somebody bricks their drive due to improper firmware flashing how does it operate and what are the signs ?
for example ....is it detected by the MB and show up in the bios ? does it power on ?
is it detected by windows ?

answered it all really there in your post, they are the signs. also failed burns if the flash went ok, loss of features. Have you such a drive?

also Im very interested to know how this is possible to do ?
I didn't think it was possible to flash the wrong firmware onto your drive ?
how could have this been done to one of our computers ?
A lot of people use our computers and someone has been messing around with them.

So, whats it for?

Reading and burning CD & DVD.

If that doesnt work then its a important sign in that direction...
