I have had my DVR-109 for quite a few years and I hardly ever used it to burn DL DVDs, since I mostly burn on my other PC. However recently I tried to burn a DL DVD Ridata +R rated at a max. speed of 8X, but for some reason the only speed I could get from Nero has been 2.4X. Burning the same type media in my other burners is quite problem free. Any sugestions, beside using the other writers

Thanks for your reply. PIONEER DVR-109 RPC1 firmware based on 1.58 I know that the media is not all that good but the fact that in my other 2 drives there has been no problems, made me think.

Isn't the answer obvious when your other 2 writers are not Pioneer DVR-109 drives?!? This media is burnspeed limited to 2.4x for a good reason: its cheapo media!!! You can find other burners which will allow you to burn this junk media faster, and the outcome will be a coaster. Few really new burners have improved write strategies and could burn some cheaper DL media better than old drives, but fake and bad quality media is anywhere these days.

I had no costers so far. It's just that the DVR-109, I have, is for some reason burning at 2.4X but still is not turning out coasters either. Both my other burners are burning at the quoted 8X

Other burners: Pioneer DVR-112D(*) Pioneer DVR-106 (Single Layer) in Venus Aluminum External Enclosure. Asus DRW-2014L1(*) Samsung SH-S222A(*)
Have used the same media on (*) for DVD movies at 8X with no costers. The odd one out is the DVR-109 which gives a good burn with the only available speed of 2.4X in Nero 9.

I haven't done anyting more. It seem obvious to me that the hardware is faulty. I have thrown in about 8 different brands and on all, the only speed I got from Nero has been 2.4X Single layer media is OK. Thanks again for your help. DVD writers only cost about 25 Euros and might as well sent the 109 to the "happy hunting grounds"
Cheers

Cheers Nope!Have you read Puma's post carefully? Reason 1: the drive is old compared to other DL burners and simply cannot "know" newer DL media. Reason 2: the only reliable media since years is Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x media which can be burned up to 6x! I don't know if Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x could be even recognized/used by the drive, but it doesnt seem so. Reason 3: it seems that you have tried a bunch of other cheapo DLs but not the only suitable one: Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x media.

Also from the list posted by JC Denton, it shows that there is no point in trying to expext any more from an old drive. We're saying the same thing in a different way. By faulty I mean that the drive is not up to today's standards. I can't see anyting wrong with cheapos if they perform well. This particular drive will not take anyting more than Verbatim for DLs

1) There are a lot of reason why not to use cheap media and I will not go into detail here since its all over the place why not to. 2) the word faulty means the something is not working as it was designed and intended to work, except your drive is working as it was designed and intended to so there for it is not "faulty", its just old.
