Guys,

If you need an affordable external USB 2 drive (up to 320GB), check this out...

Billed as 'the smallest 2.5" drive in the world', see here:

http://www.freecom.com/news.asp?id=7707&catName=press

It's all over the web at various prices, but the target price for a 320GB is between £60 to £90 inc VAT and delivery in the UK

I acquired one, and, with no effort, managed to backup a Laptop (Notebook) to it.

You may find the (small length) USB cable supplied too short but of course, you can easily get around this with an extension lead.

Edit:

I was wrong about the 'you can easily get around this with an extension lead'...the reason that the supplied USB lead is so short is because this great little drive is BUS powered not MAINS powered.

Freecom Tech support informed me that a possible way around this, is to obtain a so-called 'Wide' USB lead that is, a standard mini connector at the drive end (Type B) that terminates into TWO standard USB connectors (Type A) at the other...the idea being that you plug both A type into your PC/Laptop thus providing one connection for power and one for data flow.

I am awaiting such a lead that is on order (UK around £8.00 inc VAT & delivery).

The most common complaint I've read is that it is only encased in a (changeable) rubber cover thereby making it 'fragile'.

I have NOT found this to be the case (no pun intended).

The hard drive is from Samsung by the way.

A great LITTLE piece of external hardware.

tjs
